| Quote ="Superted"I was today given a little 'teaser' of info from a contact of mine within the club. He tells me the club have already made a TOP TOP signing that will be announced at a later date - the tone and inference was that this is a world class player! Said player is going to be on mega money, but will not be counted as our 'marquee' player, as there will be room in our cap to accommodate without using this - I'm led to believe it is an NRL based player as the talk was that the current exchange rate and costs of living puts us in a strong position and we have plenty of money to spend as a result of JP, Sinfield and Kylie leaving. The 'marquee' allowance will be saved for if another player such as a Sam Burgess were to become available.
I know some will scoff at this as heresay and BS, however I've no reason to doubt my contact.'"
Very interesting, fair sets the imagination to overdrive speculating who it might be. Be nice if true, did your contact indicate when all might be revealed?

| Quote ="Superted"I tried to push for more detail on the signing and asked 'would this be a Cooper Cronk type signing' - he gave nothing away, and just re-iterated 'all I can say is a TOP TOP signing that will shake up Super League'. He clearly wasn't going to jeopardise his position at the club by confirming my suggestions or naming the player.
I'd also suggest the top 13 in the squad listed just higher up this page will probabaly change - there may be at least 1 more sentimental departure from the club at seasons end.'"
I have no idea if he is in contract or not, but if it IS Jonathan Thurston I would buy a season ticket even if it is a 200 mile round trip. (I had the pleasure of watching him on numerous occassions when living in Townsville)
The sentimental departure will probably be JJB I suspect.

I'd be underwhelmed if so - might just be my opinion, and although he would be a good signing, I'd not call it a TOP TOP signing that would shake up Super League - but my contact could quite easily think Widdop is exactly that - we'll see I suppose.

No he didn't - but it was clear the deal has been done for some time, and if it is of huge magnitude, the club will no doubt have a clear comms strategy and timeline on it.

Which, knowing GH, will be just after the GF or just after the wheels come off depending on which comes first

......unless it is Burrow of course (so that Thurston can take the no.7 shirt ). Might explain Burrow's sudden fall from favour as a starting player.

By recent SL standards in terms of players signed from the NRL, Widdop would be regarded as top signing.

| Well one set of people must be wrong. Some say Widdop is joining, some say Brierly is joining providing Leigh don't get promoted. No way are we getting both.
Personally can't see the Brierly one happening if it's dependent on Leigh's promotion result. I don't think we'd wait around until Leigh discover their fate to know if we've got a new HB for next year. Good chance Leigh are in the £1m match at the end of the year which doesn't take place until the week before the GF, if Leigh won that then what HB are we going to be able to get by mid-October when everybody worth a damn is signed up?
The Danny Houghton rumour seems to have gone cold?

| brierly came from the horses mouth. he's desperate to join.made two transfer requests to try to force a move. Leeds def enquired about Houghton but it seems to have gone quite. i'd still like him myself. be a good addition.

I could still see the Brierly one happening but I can't see it being dependent on if Leigh fail in promotion. Seems way too risky as it leaves no time to look elsewhere.

Leeds have until end of September to pull out of the deal for brierley if they find anyone else. The deal for him is dependent on promotion for Leigh, there is quite a few Leigh players on these deals with top SL clubs.

Widdop would be a real top signing and great fit for our club.Of course, he would not come with the superstar absolute superstar reputation of a cronk or Thurston but both of them are 31/32 now and on their last legs as far as world class status goes.Widdop is mid 20's with a good decade service to give, with the added bonus of being an excellent kicker to seamlessly replace Sinfield in that department. It would be an awesome signing imo and i would prefer him over any of the 30 plus brigade from the NRL.

Widdop would be a good addition though. And IMO would be a very good fit for our club

| I somehow cannot see us signing Brierley and Widdop whilst McGuire is around.
I can see Burrow leaving which makes his 2 year deal look odd.

| Anybody saying Widdop wouldn't be an amazing coup should be more greatful! He would be amazing. He has all the temperament of Sinfield with a better passing/kicking game and twice the speed!

Sounds even more risky for Leigh. They miss out and they lose Brierly and 3 or 4 others perhaps??? Again how do they rebuild a team to challenge next year on such a late timescale? Although it wouldn't surprise me if they are so confident of success that they haven't planned for possible failure.

| Whereas Widdop would be a good signing I would regard him as a TOP player. To be a TOP TOP player you have to be called Thurston or Cameron Smith. The latter can kick and can also play 9, 6, & 7......just saying.

TOP TOP players (Thurston, Smith, Inglis, Shaun Johnson) are not possible signings, with or without marquee status. So let's stop dreaming...
