| Quote ="RonnieGinger"What do our S&C coaches do? He was overweight when he first came here and he's never lost that. Similar to Lolohea, now look at him since he's gone to Salford. Lost a lot of weight and looks a better player. Before I get jumped on, I know Hurrell has lost his mother and that's tragic as I understand he's a big family man. But to be at this stage where we are coming into a key part of pre-season, to be 10Kg over the weight he want's to be is just mind boggling.
I like the spirit of Hurrell, but sometimes it's like he wants to act about and clown around to make the crowd and camera's laugh rather than get his head down. When the team really need to muck in he sometimes goes missing.'" Lolohea did lose weight when he first went to Salford but he soon put it back on.Did you see the size of him in the CC final?

| It amazes me that some fans think that the weight of an individual player is somehow the sole responsibility of the coaching staff. Yes, they can provide guidance on what players should be eating and how they should be training, but at the end of the day some players are just bad trainers. Of course, they should be more professional as individuals. But this has to be balanced against the positive contribution they can bring to the team.
For example, it is alleged (I think in Frank Endacott's autobiography) that David Solomona was a bad trainer - and it used to show in some of his UK appearances. That said, even carrying a few extra pounds (or stone!), no-one would doubt that Solomona had the ability to single-handedly win a game for his team, on a regular basis. Like it or not, Hurrell is probably in this category, even though Leeds could probably use him a bit more effectively.

Hurrell is looking pretty lean in the vids hes posting so i guess he's taking all on board what the coaching staff are telling him which is good news all round.Hurrell said after the first lock down he came back over weight wants to fix that for the start of this season.

| The coaching staff told Koni, Rhyse and Lui at the end of last season that they wasnt in shape and all 3 was on the same edge at end of last year.

I agree that certain players can get away with carrying a bit of blubber. I dont mind hurrell carrying a few extra pounds and possibly holroyd as well but the fact that hurrell said he wants to lose 10kg is obviously not a good sign.
I take your point about individual responsibility but the club should be having harsh words with players who take the p#$#.It effects performances ,results and sets a bad example. It often seems to be our foreign contingent also.

| If you're overweight but still making a significant contribution to the side, your weight can be overlooked. No one cares what you weight or look like if you're playing well.
Having a season like Rob Lui did last year and looking like he did. Just not a good look for a professional sportsman at all.

| I think we should offer Hurrell another 2 years on marquee money IF he has another good season.
Offered us far more than most of the other marquee signings in SL (Austin, Widdopp, G Burgess last year)

| In terms of Koni, am I the only one hearing the aim is 10kg lighter than last year going into this, as in it's a work in progress. Not that he is starting from scratch with the weight loss?
If it's work in progress, and it looks to be well on it's way from footage and pics of training, then that's a big positive.

| Definitely a good thing but he shouldn't have needed to lose 10kg in the first place. That is a serious amount of weight to put on.I get he's naturally a big bloke and a couple of kg may even help him but there has to be a limit.

| I don't think he has put 10kg on during lockdown. I'd guess he came at least 5-7kg over and never got down anywhere near his current goal. I look forward to seeing how he comes into the season.....and how Long has coached the halves to utilise him better in attack

Probably hadn't done any coaching with the halves as they were all injured!

| I do wonder about what goes through some players’ minds when they are a highly paid full time professional sportsman. You’d have to work your backside off in some high end profession or do something highly illegal to get that money elsewhere, and some can’t stay out of Maccy D’s....
Anyway the point about getting Koni into space is really valid; he will be so much more effective whatever his weight if the team can play for him. Not good enough to give it to him when everyone else is out of ideas and expect him to charge through the whole opposition tram.
Get him 1-1 or even 1-2 in good ball and he’ll cause all sorts of problems. Using him as a battering ran out of heavy traffic just gasses him.

To understand it, you need to study human behaviour. Koni obviously likes putting bad things in his body ( this is an essay in itself). But Leeds signed him for 3 years when he was overweight, and not able to get an NRL gig as a result. So in his mind, they knew what c they were getting, and he plays well on the whole so gets away with it.
Now he needs a new contract, so does something about it. He'll be awesome this year if he keeps the weight off. Faster, less injury prone, better recovery times. Win win.....

| I thought gold coast wanted to keep him but we offered him silly money? I didnt think he was that over weight when he made his debut for us. I reckon a combination of his conscience, a bollicking and the desire for a new contract have all contributed to the weight loss.

Agreed, I’d have him coming off the bench when teams are tired with Sutcliffe covering many other positions but main being centre.

| If we can get him early ball against isolated defenders he will run riot. Less forwards work will hopefully reduce his errors too. I hope he'll get a contract extension for a couple of years. May not be the best player but is great to watch

As far I know he is about 108 kg. Though I think he should have a few extra kilos of muscle so he can have the extra smashing power. Otherwise he is fine the way he is.

| For such a humble lad he has a right old skill set does Jack. Great pass for his winger yesterday leading to a try. Good support play, decent pace for centre... I've seen him put a hit on in D in the Academy as well, he just needs to build that upper body strength at open age.
I'm not sure what they're trying to do with Levi Edwards in the centres - I guess he still has plenty of time to develop and find another position but unless he is incredible I imagine we have 2-3 players ahead in the queue. Maybe he will transition to back row gradually as he bulks up a bit.
As for Hurrell I do hope he has a good season because he is brilliant entertainment value.
