Well, from the footage seen, you could actually see Joel Tomkins lead with the elbow/forearm, whilst in the case of Long this week I watched it and wondered if he'd actually done anything wrong, which is why I wonder if it deserves as many as FIVE matches. Admittedly there's a lack of camera angles and slow-mo to pick out the moment of impact, but for a five match ban I'd have expected it to be in the vein of Leon Pryce on Sinfield in the Challenge Cup about 10 years ago.

Someone said earlier that a punch in "the heat of the moment" shouldn't be punished. Joel's elbow was a "heat of the moment" thing, but I would in no way suggest he shouldn't have been punished for it.

The odd thing is McGuire has gained just the one starting selection (from his 20icon_cool.gif on the Leeds wing (Daryl Powell's final team selection at Headingley - 10th October 2003 V Wigan in the Final Eliminator - you know the Brian Carney game) and where did he defend that night?

You guessed it - full-back. Mathers was named full-back but played on the wing instead.

I haven't studied the Long challenge in depth but it appeared a pretty bad one from what I initially saw of it. Jumping into a tackle that wasn't really his to make, pointy forearm/elbow first. It doesn't surprise me that the RFL have graded it as a D. If I were to liken it to another incident it'd be Cassidy on Morley at Central Park rather than Pryce on Sinfield at Valley Parade which was a blind side, unprovoked punch to the head.



Stop calling it an elbow. There was no elbow involved. If there had been he'd have been looking down the barrels of more than a two match ban just as Long is today.



You weren't talking about where you predicted McGuire would defend in future, you were stating where you've seen him regularly defend in the past. Where he defends in future (although it will almost certainly be between right centre and right wing just as he pretty much always has) is irrelevant to your point.



Let's see how you do now. You said the McGuire - Gardner incident was in a GF. Thanks for that, that's all I needed to know.

McGuire has only scored tries V St Helens in a Grand Final in 2008. The first of those from a kick through close to the line by Sinfield (McGuire slides over under the posts) and the second when the St Helens left winger failed to catch Sinfield's high attacking bomb which McGuire, from centre field, pounced on and jinked his way over. Now as Leeds were attacking rather than defending his defensive positioning is irrelevant to that incident and perhaps even more of a concern for the case for the prosecution it wasn't Gardner who spilled the bomb it was Meli. As evidence goes it's not even circumstantial at this point.



Wingers don't play by the rules. In that shot one is elbowing the other in the mush while getting his hair tugged in retaliation.

It wasn't on any of the google pages, it wasn't Gardner, McGuire was not defending or attacking on or near the wing (just watched it now), going well for Fishta isn't it.
