Almost totally re-writing events such as in U-571 (or whatever it was called) is rather different to changing one letter of a dog's name isn't it?
This was one of my points, why get worked up over that seamingly minor change (done to avoid causing offence or confusion) but readilly accept hundreds of other minor omissions or changes in pretty much every 'historical' film; not least those cited earlier from the original Dambusters film.

Interesting that - not least because my dad went to school with the outraged ex-marine and is a member of the local legion.
Looks like the chap in question is a bit of a delusional nut job.

You've a better memory than me - but I think you're right.

| Wake up Muttley you're dreaming again!
You're not Robin Hood and you're not Gunga Din!
You're not a brave knight or a king who's been crowned;
You're just plain old Muttley, the snickering hound!

| Quote ="loinertillidie"Hey, the Australians have accepted that the word is not a part of modern day parlance, you only need to put the above colour of shoe polish into a popular search engine to find the furore over the renaming of the stand at Toowoomba Oval, which the local Aborigines actually wanted to retain. it took a UN commitee to get it changed in the end.
What is the problem with accepting that regardless of social or demographic context it is not acceptable now?'"
I fully agree that use of any racial terms is now unacceptable. My point was to defend Guy Gibson being tarred as a racist for using what was in those days a commonly accept name for a colour of shoe polish, coloured pencil etc

| Quote ="Puig-Aubert"I'd agree with this yet I'd also agree with Gareth about Gibson being racist.
Mainly down to my old friend 'context' again.
In the 1940s racist actions, terminology and attitudes were normal - that's not to say everyone went round in white hoods and met up near burning crosses but that people lived in an era where there were very few non-whites, where white Britain controlled a good chunk of the world's black population and where it was normal (and even understandable) that people wouldn't give too much thought to whether the name of a product or dog might cause offence or even just maintain what were then common beliefs.
A really good book that describes the experiences of Jamaican volunteers in the war (even though fiction) is Andrea Levy's 'Small Island' -one of the best books I've read. Still seems alot better here than America though. I can lend you Mclaren_Field's copy if you like
.'"
I accept your well made point but unless any of the people posting on this thread actually knew Gibson then I do not accept that you should single him out as a racist. It is a serious accusation against a war hero who was risking his life so that our country remained free from the tyrany of real racists. If by calling his dog after name on a tin of shoe polish or the name printed on the side of a coloured pencil is being a racist then that means you have to include the whole population who also used the language of the day.
Would like to read the book though.

I would, that's my point - that 1940s Britain was an inherently racist society.

Growing up in 60s Britain we used to choose sides in games by reciting "Eeny meeny miney mo, catch a niger by his toe..." Thousands of times.

We also watched the "Black & White Minstrel Show" & even later the execrable "Love Thy Neighbour" & learnt to read, certainly in the 50s, with "Little Black Sambo".
So, yes, we were latently racist without even knowing it.
Things hopefully have changed for the better.

| Remember folks - 9pm tonight, BBC1 - "Small Island"
Set in 1948 the experiences of Hortense, a Jamaican girl who arrives in London with her new husband, ex-RAF who volunteered to help the mother land during the war and was "one of the few" but finds a different sort of life and prejudice when they return three years later.
Fits in just fine with this thread I think, will put the icing on the cake of those who doubt how far we have come in two generations.

Yes but not more so than all the other nations. Racism was not just about colour in those days. And Guy Gobson was still a hero with a VC
