Aparently, over 120,000 people in yorkshire voted BNP. That scares me. Not as much as the campaign leaflet my firends had in Newcastle, which included a National front party candiddate, whose policies included stopping immigration, and repatriation of ALL coloured people. Disgraceful.

You sure you had a kebab, and not Gyros?
A lot of Greeks tend not to be too keen on them being referred to as kebabs, sharing with you a dislike of all things Turkish.
Gyros = awesome too.

We got one of thoise down here as well. No prospect of a BNP win here, but it's still a bit disturbing.
Hopefully this will be a decent kick to the mainstream parties and a reminder that there are issues which concern the electorate which they are just not addressing. Hopefully it doesn't take more than this for things to change. The more the mainstream parties lose touch with what they're there for, the more extremist elements will sneak in at the fringes.

My friends and I had a discussion about the various things in the leaflet, and we came to a conclusion that the purpose of the party was to make the BNP look like a non extreme view, and therefore acceptable to vote for. No doubt some morons would have voted for them anyway.
It then got into a discussion about how an organisation would go about 'humanely repatriating all coloured people'. Where would they be repatriated to? How do you determine the origin of someone who is of mixed race? What consitiutes coloured? Why is there no exile for white foreigners?

Yeah, it's all your fault for not voting.
Although the suggestions of voiding your ballot paper / voting "none of the above" are exactly the same as not going, although it takes you time.
It's the people who voted BNP who should be ashamed, not those that couldn't give a flying fook who is elected 'cause they're all as bad as each other.

Probably not a huge difference but it is embarassing for the entire country.
We spend 6 years fighting the fascists then 60-odd years later elect two of them.

| Make voting compulsary. Some people may not like it, but if you want politicians to represent and consider "all the people", rather than "the people that they know vote" (and they know exactly what the demographic breakdown of voters is, which is why I get a call and an offer of a lift to the polling booth every election from the Tory Party candidate).
Many people don't vote because they know most people don't. To really make a difference then everyone, or nearly everyone, has to do it. Then you will find that suddenly that huge numbers of people become important.
The best example of block voting has to be the Jewish vote in the US. A tiny, oil free, non-Christian country in the Middle East. Founded in what was part of British controlled Palestine has it's security absolutely guranteed by the World's largest Superpower. They have the freedom to invade, bomb, and murder anywhere they fancy. They receive massive preferential status on trade and huge US Government grants. US presidents - or people who want to be President fall over themselves to show how pro Israel they are. Why? Because there are lots of Jewish registered voters in the US (many of them rich) and they all get out and vote at every opportunity.

No it's just your apathy regarding something as important as voting which I find puzzling?
All eligible people should vote. It is the only way we will get a goverment, council, European parliament which truly represents the people of the country.

You don't HAVE to vote though, your right to vote extends to a right NOT to vote, a right that some find hard to grasp.
Or put it another way - 67% of the population chose NOT to vote on Thursday, such apathy for eveything political should be a major concern to those who earn their living in that way, but it won't be, at least not to the ones who are now elected because its not in their own interest to raise the issue and try and encourage more voters into the system.
Which in itself is a damning indictment.

An incentive to improve the education system would be immediately apparant in your scenario.
I know there are a lot of really, really thick people, but even the thickest (you know, the ones who still watch Big Brother), should be able to make the same judgement as all those middle class people who would happily elect Joanna Lumley.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread – I chose not to vote this time, not because I was apathetic but because it was the only way I could register my distain with the current political system.
If there had been an option on the polling card for ‘None of the above’ I would have marked it with my cross but as there isn’t I have no option but to not vote.
Being branded as apathetic just because I didn’t vote is frankly insulting.
Don’t know how you feel about it?
