| I don't like fruit cake. So you can ice it, leave it plain or dip it in s**t and roll it in breadcrumbs for all I care.
Although if you choose the latter please don't bring it in the house.

I reckon they're buns. But a bun is just a small cake. So both.

| An enforced shopping trip into Leeds yesterday was only relieved by a take-away coffee (very good quality) and a bakewell tart from Greggs - the bakewell was very good and a deep filled version of the design, pastry very crisp, filling moist and sweet topping, I can't tell you how much it meant just to sit down on a steel bench in Briggate and munch on that for five minutes before being dragged off to yet another fsking Primark even though I insisted that it would be the same stock as the Priimark we'd just spent half our lives in that morning - who's stupid idea was it to have TWO Primark's in Leeds city centre ?

Ironically, when I saw the thread I was going to come and have a moan about why anyone on here would be talking about merging the Hull clubs (much like they do for Wakefield and Cas)
I am now much happier to see that sense has prevailed and page 19 is talking about food.
Being current and topical - Mince pies
We've been doing a taste test at work and at the moment, Tesco finest are beating all comers. We've tried all supermarkets and all ranges we can find.
Fortnum and Mason was a particularly good mince pie but at £12 for 12 pies the size of doe balls, we decided it had a professional status and was considered a Pro/Am "friendly" rather than part of the main event.
And not wanting to steer off the cakes debate but want to add a new dimension
Philpotts Christmas sandwich! It is the Emperor of sandwiches. Try it!

| Well if we're talking mince pies then let me throw into the ring of nostalgia my dear departed mothers own home cooked christmas mince pies.
Cooked in a half inch thick pastry case for several hours so that the mince would bubble out and stick to the baking tray like the strongest superglue you've ever bought, the delightful but rather heavyweight pies would be dusted with icing sugar and lifted onto the dining table by a fork lift truck - they were edible only for a very short window of time, the time in which it took for them to cool, which was a lot longer than you'd think as the mince inside had the consistency and temperature of freshly boiled lava and would strip not just the skin off your tongue but from your gullet and your stomach as it made its way down.
Eventually though after cooling the cases became as granite and would be declared as hardcore by my father and consigned to the newly shuttered pavement that he was planning to concrete in the back garden where occasionally crows would be attracted by the sugared lids only to find that my dear mothers cooking was not to be dallied with unless you were in possession of a decent amount of dynamite or wrecking ball.

| If we're going seasonal with mince pies, I have to put a shout in for Costco. Topped with a sponge confection very tasty and big enough to feed a family of four. Lush

Costco...? bit left filed there.
Morrison's 'Signature' mince pies warmed in an oven with brandy cream.

| I've yet to eat something from Costco that has not been superb quality, such a shame I'm too tight now to pay the members fee but at least its stopped me from coming home with with a giant carrot cake every time, or 24 Pain au Chocolat when really I only wanted one - and lets not mention the birthday cake I ordered for myself and it came as a full square yard of jam sponge and thick cream icing, well it needed eating and I wasn't going to turn down that challenge.

| Anyone ever been to Phantom Lounge for cake?
I had a lovely cheese cake there last time I went.
The place is heaven - shisha, comfy sofas, sport on widescreen TV and cake all under one roof

| That photo of the cake counter reminds me so much of a visit to a cafe in a small coastal village in Portugal this summer, myself and one of my old mates who works out there were being taken on a guided tour of the mountains by a Portuguese client of his, we'd already spent two hours in a restaurant way up in the mountains where we'd dined on three courses, the sweet course being a platter of all the sweets they had on offer because we couldn't make our mind up and on the way back down to the coast we stopped in another village for a 4pm coffee.
It would have been rude to refuse the proprietors offer of cake as she had made more cakes than on show in that photo, so we picked a slice each while our host was on the phone - when he saw that we were still eating puddings he couldn't believe his eyes so set a challenge to try out some typical Portuguese sweets and biscuits.
I'm pleased to say we held our own, the English are now known as fat greedy bastads in that village.
Seven puddings and two cups of coffee, I'm proud of that score,

| I do hope you tried natas as part of that feast of comestible delights.
My wife makes the best natas I've eaten apart from ones bought in Lisbon * they may only have tasted better because of where we were eating them.
She also makes the best mince pies too.
Overall even I have to concede that for the best pastries & tarts you have to go to France. Each village seems to have a patisserie producing a unique local pastry or tart.
Magnifique.

My old mate lives/works near the Val do Lobo and on my annual blagged freebie week with him not a day goes by when we pop into a village cafe for a pastel de nata, sometimes it seems like barely an hour goes by before the next one - on the day of the seven puddings we were bombarded with all sorts of pastry and cake based produce mainly involving walnuts and almonds, if heaven is like that then take me now oh lord...
