| i remember a game between leeds and widnes i think it was a rl cup quarter final and we won 5-1 and i dont think a try was scored.
the date was circa 1983 i think, and it was a great exciting game we all thought old jeff grayshon was going to do it at last and get to wembley , but the rest is history

| You know its a bad game when even the commentators describe it as 'turgid'.
The funny thing with union is that often a poor game ends up with an exciting finish though.

There was also Wigan's defeat of maly in the World Club Challenge (IIRC 8-4) and again no tries.
Because of the pathetic rules of Union, a game with no tries is usually as dull-as-ditchwater, but in League it is usually a tight, close and really entertaining game. You could tell how cr*p the Union 1st half was by their highlights package lasting about 10 seconds at the break and that included both kicks.
I wasn't long before I remembered Quins Vs Pies on Sky shortly afterwards ...'"
The Leeds / Cas game was 8-4.

One of the best academy games I have ever seen. Have it on DVD too. The defence from both teams was brutal and there was a Thunder storm in the background.

| anyone who thinks union is good should check out the bbc highlights of wales v france friday night. highlights last 5(ish) minutes of which you see 3 tries ,no replays or anything(even tho one of them is actually a cracking ball of the wales stand off), lasting 25 seconds. lots of kicks in at goal (including all the missed penalties ) which last about 2.5/3 minutes, and then rest is a group of bloke hugging.
the best part of the highlights, is the 40 seconds they spend showing & commenting on the ball hitting the over-head camera
great sport is union

| To be moderately fair to the Union guys, tye do at least try to score try's these days. Worst games in history must be Calcutta Cup matches from the 1980's. There was an old joke at the time where someone at the after match dinner asked Dusty Hare to pass the salt and he kicked it.
This is what you can get though when you have RL defensive coaches, 2 extra forwards in the defensive line and you only have to retire the the back foot of the ruck (imagine how many tries would be scored in league under thos conditions?). I guess that's why RL evolved the way it did.
Ireland were made to look very ordinary by a solid English defense, shame that another South African ref again decided that England had too many players on the pitch to make it fair.

Not really ... Croke Park is by far the biggest stadium in Ireland, but the GAA who own it make the RFU at the height of their anti-league rants look fair.
Remember, it wasn't so very long ago that you were banned from ever being a member of the GAA for playing so-called British 'Garrison Games' (like soccer or Union)
Over the past 15 years or so, the redevelopment of the ground and the addition of floodlights has turned it in to one of Europe's best sporting venues ... Not least for the fact that it is about a 15 minute walk to it from the centre of Dublin itself.
With the redevelopment of Landsdowne Road and the shelving of the Ahern-Dome Scheme to build a National Stadium akin to Wembley somewhere in Dublin (the brainchild of former PM Bertie Ahern) Croke might revert back to just the GAA when L R is complete, but who knows now that GAA attitdues have eased a little ?
Croke's capacity is around 83K and with the development of one end, it could hold even more, but Hill 16 was constructed using rubble from the Easter Rising and thus, is more than a sports ground, but is also part of Irish National history. Naturally an organisation like the GAA doesn't want to tread on too many toes by pushing for it to be rebuilt more than it has.
I've been to it a couple of times now and was part of 'the biggest sporting crowd in Irish history' when it filled to capacity for the 2nd International Rules Test Vs Australia in 2006. It is strange after Wembley, with that stadium having a vast car park and space around it, to find streets of little cottages and almost back to back houses more or less coming right up to the perimiter walls of Croke.

| twas a crap game of rugby, and the scoreline flatters england as the irish flyhalf (Ronan O'Gara) should have landed 4 more penalties, which would have led to a 26-13 score, and a much better reflection of the balance of play.
On the other hand, Carnegie scored 2 converted tries in the last 5 minutes of their National Trophy Quarter Final against Birmingham-Solihull to take the match 26-24. They will now face either 2nd place Exeter, 3rd placed Nottingham or Moseley in the semi final for the opportunity of a trip to Twickenham in April.
Oh, and my grandfather used to talk about a 0-0 he'd seen back in the 50s-60s, IIRC Wigan-St Helens at Odsal or summat like that. End to end stuff, loads of brilliant play & superb defence from both sides. Says it was the best game he ever saw.

6 in 3 games. Most of them stupid too. when the ref says to the captain next infringement like this and I'm sending someone to the bin, so what happens at the next breakdown?
The Times did a large piece on the sin bins, and broke down the number of points they have conceded whilst a man down. They would be on for the slam if it weren't for indiscipline. Still, Engalnd wouldn't have deserved a win on Staurday, they were aweful, and as were Ireland. The entertainment level of all the England 6 nations games I have seen has been near zero.

I was at both of these games, they were really good tight matches. In the first the wind was horendous. At the time Hull had Gary Pearce kicking for them, he had a close to 90% conversion rate yet in this game missed about 4 penalties because of the wind. Twice the ball got half way to the posts and got blown back to where it started from.
In the replay Hull had a try disallowed in the corner, I still say O'Hara got the ball down. I remember the stewards at Elland road having to let loads of Hull fans into the main stand rather than behind the posts as they'd underestimated just how many we'd bring. They were scared there would be another Hillsborough, it got a bit scary at one point till they started taking people out of the stand and moving them.
