| Quote ="BrisbaneRhino"The signing of Buderus still smacks of a shiny Aussie star rather than a clearly thought out plan around hooking options. The latter would have either seen Buderus signed and Diskin released (or at least told his game time would be limited to when Buderus was unfit) or a genuine rotational hooker signed, McShane promoted to do that role, or - shock horror - making use of the same system that worked in 2004, 2007 and 2008 (and with hindsight 2009) of using Diskin with no specialist backup.
From what I've seen the system of using Diskin from the bench doesn't work. To me its effectively a waste of a bench spot in most games.'"
The signing of Buderus was an opportunistic signing of a shiny Aussie star rather than a clearly thought out plan around hooking options. In March of 2008, Hetherington made a trip to Australia to secure a replacement from the NRL for the departing second rower Gareth Ellis. Whoever his possible targets were (evidence points to Frank Pritchard being top of the list) he failed to secure the signing of a replacement second rower and quite bizarrely returned from his trip having signed Danny Buderus instead, who was conveniently trumpeted as a [url=http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/Breaking-Leeds-Rhinos-sign-Aussie.3874282.jpreplacement for Ellis[/url
Not even the most gullible of Rhinos ts would be capable of swallowing a line of spin proclaiming the Buderus signing as a replacement for Ellis, hence the afterthought of a well thought out plan concerning rotational hooking options and the excitement of a Buderus/Diskin partnership.
Five months later, the signing of Greg Eastwood was announced and also trumpeted as [url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyleague/2626636/Leeds-Rhinos-sign-Greg-Eastwood-to-replace-departing-Gareth-Ellis-Rugby-League.htmlGareth Ellis's first choice replacement[/url, having failed to sign Frank Pritchard.

| Quote ="BrisbaneRhino"Maverick, you're missing the point. Nobody's arguing that if Leeds wanted to sign a hooker for last year, Buderus was clearly the best available in the world. What IS being argued is whether signing Buderus made any sense if he was brought in to operate in rotation with Diskin, a role which suits neither of them.
The signing of Buderus still smacks of a shiny Aussie star rather than a clearly thought out plan around hooking options.

As usual, your spot on. The signing of Buderus was not made based on a tactical move, and more based on his name. Its resulted in neither player hitting the heights they had previously in their career, and wasted a bench spot which could have been taken by someone with real impact.
It was a better signing than Shane Millard though
My whole stance on it has always been that regardless of name, or reputation the players should be appraised on current form on the pitch, rather than what has been achieved in the past. Both players have great pasts. From my view Buderus has out-performed Diskin this season, Diskin was better last season.
However, had Buderus not signed for another year, I doubt it would have weakened the team/squad noticably.

As Buderus has played in 30 out of a possible 34 games so far this season his old body doesn't appear to be struggling to cope whether it's feeling the strain or not.

That is because, as you well know, he has deliberately been played for around one half of each game.
After your earlier stats showed he played regular 80 minute spells in his last NRL season, he arrived injured and missed plenty in 2009. This stat shows the interchange strategy appears to have kept him fit, maybe the coaches know what they are doing?
Keep up the good work.

| Still trying to identify these numerous injuries he's allegedly had while at Leeds and how they compare to the average in SL and wondering if it's a valid point considering his availability over the 2010 season.
Once you exclude the injuries he arrived with (torn bicep and a knee requiring a minor clean up) and the broken leg he sustained at Wigan that ended his 2009 season, he's missed very few games, injured or otherwise.

Thanks.
It was Maverick who correctly pointed out that he'd arrived injured which therefore exempts the early season absences due to the torn bicep and minor knee clearout, which basically leaves the broken leg and the odd game here and there since.
I don't know how the injuries he collected while at Leeds compares to the SL average but I'd be surprised if it was significantly more than you'd expect given the nature of the sport.

'" IIRC didn't he arrive injured and miss some games, play some, get injured, miss some more, play some more then break his leg?
It's tough to recall his break downs being so prodigious in the first year he played at the intensity of SL.

Except I wouldn't agree they were particularly prodigious in the first year and clearly he's had a very good record of playing availability in 2010.
Buderus arrived with a couple of injuries carried over from his NRL career. He missed the opening game. Played in the next one before having a scheduled clearout of a troublesome knee problem, which according to the club (probably fearing the 'Clyde' reaction from supporters) he had arrived in this country with. If true, why they waited until the start of the season to carry out the procedure was a strange/bewildering decision. Missed the next six games.
Played the following sixteen straight - then broke his leg causing him to miss the final eight. Obviously players (even great ones - excluding Keith 'the machine' Senior) still pick up injuries from time to time and it's all part and parcel of the game which I know is a point you fully appreciate.

How does Budurus's appearances compare to Matt Diskins over the 2005-2006 period? That would be a fair indicationm, and over the same two year period.

Nah, 2007 and 2008 and would be a fairer indication. If you disagree please explain why you chose 2005 and 2006 and why they are fairer than 2007 and 2008.

So in other words Matt Diskin couldn't handle the intensity of super league in 2005? no really. But in 2006 he starts to match up to the same sort of games played ratio that Buderus has achieved this year?
Bit of a nonsense really, but just highlights how long term injuries stop you from playing.
