I dont think crowds have ever been too great for early rounds of the challenge cup.Granted they have certainly fallen away since pre SL days but even going back over 20 years to the 1990/91 cup, we played Bradford at home and pulled just 9,076 fans to the game, whilst Saints at home to Wakey drew a paltry 4,586.the following season we played Saints at Headingley and got just a tad more at 9,610.

That said, the Semi finals attendances have dropped markedly in recent years.pre- SL you would be looking at a guaranteed 15 to 30k Semi finals (maybe some quarters too) whoever was playing, these days yo are lucky to see 5 figures even if the big boys meet.

The Final has pretty much held up in its attendance figures, but im not so sure how much longer that will continue if it disapears from mainstream TV, and as a result, out of the minds of the 'once a year for the big event' attenders consciousness forever.

Currently capacity is 5k however there is work going on daily at ckub to increase capacity and the club are hopeful of a increase prior to sunday.

It won't be required.

They had such big attendences that they had to use huge International sporting venues such as Swinton to accomodate the masses.

Nothing worrying about it really. Pre Super League the Challenge Cup was the premier cup as the League was just a first past the post race.

Since Super League, the Challenge cup Is nothing more than an hindrance, and an opportunity for the minnows of super league to have their day.

I am not surprised interest dwindled. Personally, I have absolutely zero interest in this cup competition. Would rather have the Yorkshire/Lancashire cups brought back than this, and have a double header final.

But of course this same debate comes up every year.

Sad (IMO as i love the cup with its great History, and its standing throughout the World of RL), but true.

But it also has to be said, if the Challenge cup is now the hindrance to the main competition of winning the SL title then Why are the semis to get to OT just as poor as the Challenge Cup Semis and in some cases worse? I wonder if they will improve when the Cup is killed off in the next few years?

Fans are used to paying one lump sum for the RL. Another extra payments could be hard to swallow close together, so priorities are made.

I must admit I miss the intensity of the challenge cup as was, I remember also as kids we went to some well attended semi-finals at odsal.
I also miss the old fashioned style Australian tours,when our top sides went head to head with the Australians.

. You'd think people had so many better things to do to hear 'em talk. Most will end up putting that new curtain pole up or sat at the in-laws debating whether to have another coffee or a green tea. The others that end up tidying the garage will either stand on a garden rake or get a nail through their foot for their troubles.

Sounds like one of my normal sundays, knee deep in preparing a roast dinner whilst occasionally glancing at the wendy ball on sky. That's why I will be in residence at Belle Vue on sunday!!!

Sky is evil they killed off the CC and stupid fans who only became fans in the most recent generation know no different.

I think it is a shame that he CC isn't drawing the interest. The CC was always the way non-league people outside the the M62 corridor got their dose of RL on the BBC. In a lot of ways it still is. Sky has presented the game very well on TV, but the BBC upped their game some years ago and (if they could somehow get shot of "Jiffy"icon_wink.gif arguably do the better job now. Especially as the Eddie and Stevo show is looking very, very tired now.
Superleague sounds like something a marketing guy thought up (probably because it is) wheras the CC has a huge weight of tradition, history and authenticity. But I guess, much like the FA Cup, it's been relegated to a sideshow.

You still can't beat a good cup tie though, knockout rugby has delivered the best games over the years. I think if you were to ask me my top 10 Leeds games, 8 or 9 of them would be knockout games. CC, JP Trophy and playoff. It would probably be the same for 10 worst.
