He played a lot of games because he could cover multiple positions. What position was he ever first choice in during his time at Leeds? I'm not having a go, I expect most teams would kill for a decent utility player. I'm just not sure he's that good in any one role.

BTW - utlity puts him in the same sort of bracket as one of my early Leeds heroes, Neil Hague, who I saw play every back role plus loose forward.

That's my thoughts, especially after being impressed by the recent online interview with JT, where he talked of the idyllic lifestyle, his determination to do well etc.

Sean Long and Richard Horne will be the halves next year then. Where does this put Tansey?

Neil Hague was primarily the right centre at Leeds taking over from Syd Hynes when he retired. Covering other positions didn't make him utility in the same way I would apply the term to Tansey.

Tansey has to find his best position and as yet he hasn't proved himself outstanding in any.

Agree with this 100%. I love the way everyone thinks he's going to be greatjust because he's played a few games in Australia. Certainly not good enough for Leeds IMHO.

as for what tansey actually said, if you haven't realised yet. in sport one thing is said to the press, another thing happens/is meant most times. and as i've already said earlier, what makes him look better to the press & general fans. "i knew i was gonna get games, look at me, i have the skills, i played for the super league champions, why wouldn't i make it" or " i came out here for the experience, i didn't think their was much chance of me playing first grade"

i don't need it in black and white, its common sense that a club wouldn't spend thousands of pounds on a player, just for him to play second team. then again have syndey paid him anything, or have leeds paid his plane tickets, rent, wages? a man like you would know, wouldn't you?

Tansey was cover at Leeds. Ended up cover at Hooker and not very good at it. He was never coming back to Leeds despite the reports so its' £30k in the bank.

Still, good luck to the lad. IMO, his best shot is as a half back.

tvoc - I started watching Leeds in 81 - Hague was starting fullback that year. I don't think he was first choice right centre for any length of time from then, which is what I've based my view on. Tell you what though, he'd be in the 17 of any SL side now.

I may have been a bit quick with my initial reply looking back. Unfortunately I don't have an easy way to break down Hague's first few seasons for Leeds although I stand by my comment that he took Syd Hynes place in the side when injury forced Syd to retire in 1976.

Where I do have stats from, Hague's utility value was very much in evidence.

Without question. He looked comfortable in every position he was asked to play. There was a season (1977/78 ) when he scored tries in 9 consecutive appearances for Leeds. At that point he was almost Offiah-esque for pace. I don't know where it came from or where it went afterwards but no-one in the league could touch him for that brief spell. As the totals indicate he was very rarely injured as well.
