Can someone remind me of the Meninga story...I'm quite young and have a limited memory of the 80's

I believe that Harry Jepson and co. went to Australia to recruit and had Meninga lined up along with Grothe (and possibly Wayne Pearce if really wild rumours were to be believed). I heard that Ray French was out there also and had a chat with Mal and convinced him to sign for Stains instead, even though he wasnt't working for Stains at the time.
Meninga was truly awesome that year.

Peter Sterling had a two year contract signed with us in the late eighties but injuries prevented him fulfilling it. What a pleasure it would have been to see Sterlo in blue and amber!

Won St Helens the Lancashire Cup and Premiership almost single handedly.

The Premiership final was at Elland Rd on the same day and same time that Valley Parade burnt down. Mal Meninga put a shoulder into George Fairburn that afternoon and Fairburn just laid there crumpled in agony. It was also Stan 'Max' Wall's last ever game in charge of St Helens, I mean Rugby League as a first class referee.

They just don't have days like that anymore.

I read an article I think by Phil Caplin who apparently said this is a myth and in fact Beven never had a trial or asked for a trail at Leeds.

I have the grand final wins on DVD.

I've probably still got them on VHS somewhere but just like the rest of my tapes/discs they'll spend their remaining days gathering dust scattered around the house.

I heard the same story. One of those urban legends.

I once had a conversation with frank stanton , he told me he had verbaly agreed to join leeds when bamford got the GB job and had sterling tied up, Leeds the decided to go with peter fox, the rest is history, a bad chapter in leeds history!!! at least they stayed up on points diff.

I think people like Craigloiner tend to confuse a "sense of homour" ie. whit and intelligence combined to comedic effect, with "being stupid at every opportunity and then bagging everyone who doesn't get it" which is just really, really boring.
