| Not a great showing from the coach last night. Delaney, Peacock and the other props were looking gassed defensively after about 20 mins. But we kept three fresh forwards unused for nearly 50 mins. The coach realised two late after the two quick strikes by Cas in the 2nd half and Singleton and Kylie made an immediate impact but the move was too late.
And a short turnaround after a trip to Perpignan is not the time to utilize his unused sub masterstroke. For all the deficiencies last night we have a chance to win that game with better use of the 17, IMO.

| A great coach my backside. Next year we will see how poor he is with no Sinny or JP? Tactically naive!

Since he took charge in 2011 - 2 SL titles, 2 CC's ( plus 2 more finals), 1 WCC . With still the chance to collect the LL's shield on friday and 2 games away from a 3rd SL title and a unique treble. Even the greatest of coaches would be happy with that record if the last part comes to fruition in the next 3 games.I know he has many detractors on here, and sometimes he has earn't some stick that has gone his way but what really can't be argued is he is one of the most successful coaches the club has ever had in regards to putting trophies in the cabinet and he surely deserves a bit more respect than shown in the comment you have just made.

Maybe the club can no longer excuse the lack of an appointed assistant coach? I guess Sinfield and Peacock have been the 'unoffical assistants' up until now.

Maybe the thinking was the team could beat Cas without spending too much personnel for the next match.....but as you say he realised too late.
(God knows what his thinking was/is really). The non-use of a sub is especially utterly bizarre: why select somebody you have no confidence in? It doesn't matter what the apologists suggest, it makes no damn sense whatsoever. It's a 17 man game, not 16, isn't it? !!!!
I wonder if it was the old 15 (13 and 2 subs) man game whether McDermott would have left Dick or Dickinson kicking their heels on the bench while the team run out of steam?

Most successful does not always equal best, particularly in a job where your success rests so heavily in the hands of other people.
Was Shankly a better manager than Clough, for example? His record of winning league titles would suggest he was.

Indeed - some of the reaction you get on here is akin to that Cloughie got on the Elland Road training ground

Don't worry I'm sure it won't be long until he's in posters crosshairs on here, for the time being though McGuire is the SouthStander scapegoat for anything that goes wrong in 2016.

Think it's a slight over reaction. Some have questioned if he should be captin next year and given valid arguments.
Personally he wouldn't be my capt for next season for various reasons. One of which is he has enough on trying to fill some of sinfields boots play wise. If it does go tits up this year though I can see mags coping for it

| Its not ridiculous, its what happens when we lose. Or any club for that matter. The one thing after a loss is that forums are much more interesting, or at least lively. Last year we did so well for so much of the season that it really did get dull on here. Silver linings and all that...

well we are starting with all the defensive effort and attack cohesion of the 2011 and 12 seasons
I do love how people think you either need to be fully against the coach or completely for him
Fans were right to be sick of him in those early seasons (he wouldn't have lasted until the playoffs at saints) and some of the things he does, such as poor interchange policies, not trusting youth players enough, lack of attacking moves and not lighting a fire under the defence as happened today are legitimate concerns
BUT with the trophies we've won and the injuries we've got, he deserves AT LEAST a season before we even start considering asking for a new coach
(unless Trent Robinson want to coach in SL again for some reason )

| In terms of the big trophies he's the most successful in the history of the club. It would take a really poor year this year and next (assuming we don't get relegated) to make GH consider getting rid of him. Even then it would probably be one of those "upstairs" moves (head of rugby?) than actually getting rid.
The club is far more likely to respond to a poor year this year with more changes to the squad, including one or two 'star' signings than get rid of BM.

I agree, no way McDermott will be under much pressure even if we have a bad year and nor should he be. He will have completed his 6th season in charge of Leeds after this year though, a long time in this day and age and he has nothing to prove now as a club coach. How long does a coach go on at one club before he starts to become a bit stale too no matter what success he has had? Bennett will be England head coach until after the WC next year, makes you wonder if the natural progression for Mac is to take over at the end of that. Will be interesting to see if he is brought on board as an assistant by Bennett and the RFL in the coming months.

Does his role with the USA side preclude that?

| In a recent interview with Phil Caplan, Phil said Brian Mac would never have been considered for the England job due to ‘political’ reasons and that he is seen as ‘the Brian Clough of Rugby League’.
Thoughts?
