| Quote ="McLaren_Field"For someone who works in sport you seem to not understand the relationship between a club and its supporters ?
I've "supported" the club since 1966, sometimes not at all financially, sometimes with substantial (to me) financial expense including a year of player sponsorship - and lets not forget that the members of southstander.com have for many years (including this one) bought shares in various players - we sponsored Matt Diskin for three years early in his career for example.
So if the members of southstander, many of whom bought sponsors shares this year, seem to be "obsessed" with the team and rather disappointed that one member does not seem to be "very committed" to his involvement, probably right from the start, then you'll have to excuse us, we know you can't possibly understand because maybe you're just not that sort of emotionally involved in any specific club, maybe your profession only focuses on individuals ?'"
Im very passionate about sport, especially rugby league. I take enourmous pleasure in seeing players ive worked with sign pro terms and hope to see them running out in superleague in the near future. But i see the wider view of the game and the peolple involved. Most coaches i know are not fanatical fans but more appreciate the skill of the game. Its the tit for tat tribal mentality that to me,and others alike, appears very child like and a bit unhealthy.
I once saw a Jimmy Greaves interview he said that his neighbour banged on about 'The Arsenal' and it drove him mad, the summary of his interview was "go support your team, watch the matches but dont be obsessed, get a life, its a game" ....kind of how i feel. So many people show more 'loyalty' to the club they follow than their own immediate lives and i dont get that, youre right.

| Eastwood has let coach McClennan down big time after all the support he has offered him publically through the media. His initial glowing character reference seems to have been built on sand now.
A disappointing state of affairs.

Thats what happens when you mix your main source of pleasure with business - its the one reason that I'm glad that I never took up the offer of a job as a commercial artist when I was 17

Seth,
I think Mclaren has put across the point about the business side, the contract and the passion and involvement of supporters sufficiently well and suffice to say i agree with him.
However, what about the aspect you must understand which is the relationship with coaches and team mates. How is his relationship given that all the other players are so clearly and obviously committed to the cause long term and he isn't. There's already some rumour on here that he is unpopular. As a coach you ask your players to trust you and to commit to your game plan. You expect some trust and, more importantly, some commitment back.
There's been a breach of trust on Gregs part IMO. This business about home sickness is, IMO, a piece of . Having failed to get over for the 09 season at the indulgence of our club, he was allowed to spend a year at the Doggies and, as seems clear from the Aussie media reports all year, they've nobbled him. Fair enough, I'm not naive, but he's taken on a commitment and signed a fixed term contract with us. I think GH knows Cnaterbury have nobbled him, hence the £100k price tag. That is a message to them, IMO.
If he has issues, give the fag get some tissues. Then make him man up and repay the club, the coaches and his team mates for the commitment they've shown him.
Anyway, home sickness is no big deal. I've been sick of my home for years but the wife still hangs around.

I'm disappointed in how Eastwood has conducted himself since we signed him back in 2008. I think he should have at least put a stop to the rumours about him which he has now done. It doesnt make his conduct over the past two years right though. Are employees of the club not disappointed by his conduct then?

It's all come down to the passport application/Visa really. Eastwood may have been at fault? but a minor driving conviction seemed at the time a rather feeble reason for refusing him a work permit prior to his UK passport application. Then he gets settled at the Bulldogs (and in Sydney) for a year. If that hadn't happened then he may have been perfrctly happy at Leeds for his entire contract. I think it's been a bad deal for the club and bad deal for the guy himself, bearing in mind he's only a kid (or BDL as McF would call him) I can see things from his point of view. In interviews he doesn't come across as the sharpest tool in the box, barely able to string two grunts together, and coming out in support of the coach in the media may be beyond his communication skills.
I'm dissapointed more than annoyed. But every for door that closes another opens.

| spot on. i have no doubt he has been tapped up but every club does that.
if he was happy here then it wouldn't matter who tapped him. fact is he wants to go home. if he can help us to a gf win then all the better, you certainly can't fault his effort in games.
theres no way we will get a transfer fee, aussies rarely pay a fee but
gh can use it as a bargaining tool for players.
i'd like to see a top class prop or centre to come in, a real strike centre like keef in his prime.sadly not many of them about

That's fair enough but IIRC coach McClennan was at pains to sell Eastwood's strength of character to a Leeds public and that strength hasn't been all that evident in his Headingley experience, IMO.
Did coach McClennan mis-judge him or has he let the coach down?
Very disappointing either way.

McLennan explained that when he and other antipodeans came to Leeds they could go to their rented homes of an evening to their families where as the poor lamb doesn't have that.
I'm also not buying it, there has got to be more than that although why the secrecy I don't know.
If there is no more to it than that then he will forever go down in RL history as the player who gave up a career because he missed his mummy.
