If it's on wikipedia then it must be true.
I'll take wikipedia's version over some ''bio-chemist''.

| He's photo shopped that. That was not the PM he sent.
He was very unhappy in the actual PM and use foul and abusive language.
It was only when I threatened to sue that he paid up.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/80288 ... on%20three
I hate to refer to the "Media", but credit to the BBC, this guy sums things up fairly well in simple language.
Actually just noticed, the only thing that seems to be changeing is that the number of actual deaths seems to drop daily from the original guestimates.
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/hig ... 037406.stm
Try this one as well. We're now moving to phase 3 reporting ("have the Government overreacted and panicked us all needlesly?"icon_wink.gif faster than I thought.
There are some extremely complex components that have been isolated in the H5N1 avian flu and some (just some) of the mechanisms and pathways that give it such a truly horrific mortality rate have been identified. Avian flu has killed 60% of all infected, compare that to the 1918 H1N1 that killed 5-10% (and it's still not clear exactly how - and it will certainly not be a simple explanation). H5N1 causes catastrophic respiratory damage abrogated by certain pro-inflammatory cytokines - leading eventally to death in most cases.
Now, it may be that the correct genetic modifications occur to make this swine flu as deadly as 1918 - that's a possibility that exists with all new H1N1 that jumps species, to rule that out would be against basic scientific investigative principles. But so far - this virus is thought to attack the upper respiritory tract and not cause massive injury in the lower respiratory tract that can cause septic shock type reactions.
I haven't seen anything conclusive regarding the pathology of the Mexican outbreak - it's still on-going. I can pretty much guarantee it won't be one factor involved.
Wikipedia is useful, I use it myself quite a lot. Nice to see a healthy interest in science.

The people who have contracted it recently may not realise it now, but they could be lucky.
If it ''mutates'' and becomes more virulent in the winter, they will be immune.

| Mine came through the post today – the government must have spent £thousands producing a leaflet telling us how to wash our hands…??
For that sort of money we could have cured the dry rot in the Right Honourable Member for Luton’s coastal holiday home 100 miles away from her constituency… oh wait a minute… we did.
