I'm struggling to work this one out - yes its obviously where the Armley Gyratory (that big roundabout) is now, the roundhouse tram depot and the railway arch is still there and I think the gas thingy is still there too and so presumably the roundabout is where the yellow vans (British Gas vans ?) are parked ?
To the left I'm assuming that the new white-looking building is the former Royal Mail sorting office and if you follow the railway viaduct around from bottom left to the middle of the photo are those two stone structures what is left of Central Station (one of which is still there) ?
If you drew a line across this photo halfway up it, almost everything below the line has been wiped out and yet this must only be mid 60's ?

A cargo lift I think ?
My dad used to have an office at the end of Wellington St next to City Square and he spoke of having to go to Central Station on a daily basis to collect parcels sent up from their head office in London so to him it was always the goods station.

It was mainly for wagons. At ground level below the arches there was a goods yard as can be seen in the picture above. I believe there was more than one

Both stations had cargo. Originally the two stations were created by competing companies before nationalisation of the railways. What is now Whitehall riverside were warehouses for both stations. I seem to remember in the late 80s what is now platform 1 at city was still used for goods. I seem to remember regularly seeing the mail train parked up when going for days out to ilkley

I could be wrong, but the area where the yellow vans are parked is possibly still there in the centre of the gyratory. There is an area in the centre which is accessed by a tunnel from the British Gas offices.

My earliest memory of Leeds is going through the long tunnel on the inner ring road to get to the M62 when watching my Uncle play away games for Doncaster or York.
When I was 6 that tunnel felt like it was miles long, I used to wind down the window and shout as loud as I could

It's the YEP building (more specifically, [url=http://goo.gl/maps/8NvXVthis part of the YEP building[/url) and immediately behind it is the International Pool.

Right, and the Royal Mail building isn't there yet because it would be further into the middle of the photo anyway being beyond those railway station lift towers.
So anyone want to have a stab at a year, it should be possible to pin it down fairly accurately I would have thought ?

The international pool was built in 1967 and the YEP building was built in 1970 so that places the photo as early 70's and sometime between 1971 and 1974.

| When I used to go to the Scarborough Cricket Festival in the early 60s I had to get the train from Shipley to Leeds Central station & then change to City Square station to catch the train to Scarborough.
So Central station was a passenger as well as a goods station.

Anyone recognise this ?
Just to prove that photography was around when I was born this was taken seven years BEFORE my birth and is within a hundred yards or so of the house where my parents (and me) lived for the first few years of my life, if I had a half crown for every time I've been pushed up that hill in a pram then I'd be paying someone else to type this for me now.

| I'm pretty sure the view is of the junction of St Anne's Drive and St Michael's Lane, which crossed the railway over that narrow bridge to the right on its way to the practice pitch of old and the South Stand of course.
My Gran lived in Lumley Grove, a Victorian Back-to-back across the allotments to the left. There was a bakery over the bridge which issued a wonderful aroma, in front of which the railway embankment was damaged in a rare WW2 bombing raid.
Opposite the bakery is the start of the Ginnel leading along the back of the West Terrace.

| Yup, both correct
When I was born we lived in a back-to-back on Lumley Road and then a year or so later moved further down Beechwood Crescent to a semi detached house near the garage and then just to complete our dizzy ascent to true poshness off to Cookridge in 1964, land of one car families (instead of one car streets) using a knife to eat your tea with and a cocktail cabinet in the sideboard.
The railway bridge has bittersweet memories because once when we were crossing it I heard a train coming on the tracks beneath, a steam train as they all were, and my mother held me up over the fence (on top of the wall) to watch it - big mistake - its a lesson lost in the mist of time now but you never lean over a bridge when a steam train is chuffing its way along underneath you - face full of hot ash is what you get, cried all the way to the shops

I think it's actually just a not very good pub (Bar Red) that serves Thai bar food.

Its on the Leeds Back In The Day facebook group if anyone wants to see it.
Is this one of the photos that turned up recently from the 1940s where some random Ministry with random cash in the budget and a random RAF plane and hi-def camera after the war decided to photograph every square inch of the UK, then years later when no-one was bothered about the collection they offered it to all of the various counties in England for their own safe keeping and most of them refused except West Yorkshire ?
Can't even remember where I read that now - probably on this thread if I could be d looking.
