| Quote ="MHL"so if the police decide to move to a different position one day, which just so happens to be a spot where your day dreaming for 5 seconds. thus catch you speeding by 5mph, you'd class yourself at stupid? and not unlucky that you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
sidenote:
baring in mind the chance of killing someone at 40mph, compared to 30mph. don't you think that going 10mph over the limit should be a bannable offence!
do you think the police/courts let you off with points & a fine because they're nice, or do you think that they give you (up to 5) chances because they know that its better to concentrate on the road ahead & know that with in the space on 10/15 seconds its very easy to be going 5/10mph over the limit with out noticing
how long is a piece of string ?
[size=67just in case you don't get my point, you can't get a number of offences from "a string of speeding convictions." so for all you know he's only had 2 or 3 convictions, of which he could have been unlucky for all of them.[/size'"
Anyone day dreaming for 5 seconds whilst at the wheel of a car should never be allowed to drive again. What is this bollox about having to constantly look at your speedo? Dont you ever check your mirrors? Cant you tell how fast you are going by the sound and feel of your car anyway?
Why dont you just admit you want to drive at the speed you deem to be suitable rather than thinking up a load of garbage to try and justify doing it by accident?

Are you sure? The ACPO rules state that enforcement start at 10% of the speed limit plus 2mph. So in a 30 mph zone the minimum would be 35mph.

We'd have no one allowed to drive if we applied that rule.
Would have to get rid of all road transport, along with trains and aircraft too if we were to take it to it's logical conclusion.
Quote ="Robbo4"Why dont you just admit you want to drive at the speed you deem to be suitable rather than thinking up a load of garbage to try and justify doing it by accident?'"
Surely everyone drives at the speed the deem suitable? To drive at a speed they deemed unsuitable could be incredibly dangerous.

I think the "10% + 2mph" is always just a guideline to the approach to be taken, not a rule.

Strange how I can manage to drive without drifting off into a daydream. 5 seconds is actually a long time. The poster claimed it was more important to watch the road ahead then spend a fraction of a second glancing at your speedo but then says people speed because they day dream for a full 5 seconds?
Quote ="Richie"Surely everyone drives at the speed the deem suitable? To drive at a speed they deemed unsuitable could be incredibly dangerous.'"
Depends how sensible you are I suppose. What you might deem suitable I might deem too slow or too fast. Now if only we had a way of taking that decision out of the hands of people who dont know what a suitable speed would be......

| As a serving police officer of Springfield (in "Homer to the Max" - Police Cops), I can tell you when you are most likely to get stopped for speeding
There are a few rules you need to know
Motorway driving:
The rules on speeding are that no-one will take any notice of you if you are within 10% over the speed limit. ie 70mph + 7 = 77mph.
If you are in a group of cars that are, say, doing 85mph again we wouldnt take any notice.
But if you were on the motorway and doing 85-90mph on your own then we would be interested.
Anything over 85-90mph and you are deffinately going to get stopped.
Also a real old car doing 85mph+ will get stopped.
If you look really young and in a BMW for example, you will get stopped.
Weaving from one lane to another or staying in the outside lane all on your own, you will be stopped.
Having defective lights, indicators or a smoking exhaust, we will also have a chat with you.
City driving:
Same as the above as speed limit + 10% any over and your going to be pulled over.
Really slow driving, no lights etc
Any swerving around indicates you just left the pub.
Any lads hanging out of the back window will also attract attention.
Hope this helps and safe driving!, D'oh

Depends what you call a daydream.
Ever gone past a motorway junction and then realised you don't know what number it was?
Whilst I wouldn't missed coming off at the right junction, for the 80% bit of the middle if you asked me how far into the journey I was I'd have little idea.
Ever found yourself autopiloting onto the route to work on a weekend when you were meant to be driving somewhere else?
It's easy enough to have five seconds where whilst still fully aware of the road, you might not be aware of your exact speed.

Perhaps by having them take lessons, a then a test to judge their capability?
Gotta be better than arbitrary numbers.

They shouldn't even record a vehicle doing 34mph. The threshold should be set at 35mph.

Its also impossible to accurately judge your speed to the nearest 1mph without checking your speedo, anyone who says they can is a liar.

Thats slightly different to day dreaming. I've always been aware of the speed I'm travelling at just as I'm always aware I'm driving on the right side of the road or in the right gear etc. Its part of driving IMO.

I've seen enough complete numpties on the roads who have passed a test to convince me I'd rather have an arbitrary maximum speed limit.

It's probably easier to find yourself unaware of the speed limit than the speed your at TBH. Particularly when we have the bizarre situation that the one place we really don't want people driving too quickly is the one that doesn't have reminders of the limit.

I've put the car in the wrong gear by accident before of course but I've never driven around in the wrong gear without realising
It doesn't need a reminder because every road in the country is 30mph unless told otherwise. That is why all the other roads have reminders. TBH I can understand how people are unaware of the speed limit simply because they have not been taught properley. All this street lights stuff does is confuse people.
They should simply explain that every road is 30mph. If the speed limit changes you get a big sign telling you it has changed and then further smaller reminders every 200 yards (I think) telling you the speed limit. If you dont see a reminder within about 10-20 seconds of driving you know its a 30.

I’m not too sure when the last time you had a season ticket but in the 06 season it was the most frustrating to be a rhino’s fan as we where just going nowhere. It looks like he has got his hands in his pockets since and got us Webb, Buderus and soon to be Eastwood.
This bloke at the back of you probably knew what he was talking about and it’s a shame you dismissed him because he was a bit drunk.
