Hull has been a cultural desert forever. Famous Leeds human rights campaigner William Wilberforce never went there while leading one of the most important socio-political changes of the industrial age. Celebrated Leeds poet Philip Larkin also shunned the city throughout his life. In our own sport Leeds legend Clive Sullivan gave it a wide berth when he was GB's first black captain.

But, if you do decide to break with the tradition established by those people, you might find several (in my opinion) excellent museums, England's largest (and surely one of the most beautiful) parish church, housing some of the most important preserved medieval brickwork in the country. There might be a very good public art gallery that weds its formal collection to a brilliant program of local-led events and exhibitions. Maybe even a couple of good theatres, a host of fantastic old pubs and even a recently refurbished grade 2 listed public park.

But nah, unemployment's pretty high so there can't be owt worth seeing there.

You should add the letter y to the end of your username as you obviously don't have a clue what the word culture actually means . You should read your history books or better still take an educational trip around the City of Hull and take a little time to learn about its rich heritage and history.
Then you may just realize how misinformed you have been all these years and hopefully prevent you making rash uneducated quips.

The same people probably said the same thing when Bradford applied for the City of Culture, and of course they too would have completely missed the point of what the city of culture status is supposed to achieve...

Uk city of culture was a pretty good idea to begin with but that idea wasn't really followed through, not really sure what the point is of how it has eventually been put in to practice

Great achievement and just think of the publicity the RFL has missed out on for the Semi Finals. Placing one at the KC the same week as the UK is talking about the City of Hull would have been great.

No disrespect to the city of culture award (you can read my thoughts on your charter city above), but I would say that publicity as a sideshow would pale rather compared to the impact it will make if we can get 70k+ bums on seats in the national stadium this weekend. Which is what the double header aims to achieve. 140k-150k live atendance at 2 RL matches in the space of a week? That's something you can use to show the sport in a good light.

Also, consider the period of time elapsed since the tournament schedule was finalised. How confident would you, in the RFL's shoes, have been that Hull was going to win? Where's the publicity in riding the feelgood factor of an unsuccessful application to be city of culture?

I don't think the benefits of what you're suggesting would have been great enough to outweigh the risks.

I'd rather have le grand depart myself.

It seems to be an award handed out to really sh*t cities to give its residents a glimmer of hope to cling to while drudging through the mundane squalor of their existence.

Not really sure what to say, except:

Its not a missed opportunity at all. Its not even an opportunity as no-one outside of the city of culture committee would have known which way the decision would have gone, and probably not a year ago when the venues were decided. Even if they did, I'm not sure that 60,000+ at wembley is such a bad thing

That point of view would require a line of thinking that means every citizen in any city that has a person who breaks the law, carries the guilt of that person on their backs too, in essence you could place every citizen in a city in the dock every time there is a law broken in that city because they all carry the presumption that "they are all like that" in that city.
