| Quote ="El Diablo"I suggest those too young to remember Schoey as a centre, or like me were quite young and want a re-cap, there's lots of good stuff on a certain video-sharing site. Exceptional player. More than reasonable 'tache too.
The difference between Hanley and Senior in this debate is that I don't think Hanley really earned his reputation as a centre. He was a 6 or 13 really. Mainly 13 for me.
My point was, though, while we can argue about the place of players like Slater, Inglis, Thurston and Smith in the pantheon of all time greats, it's been a fair while since we've produced anyone who will even be part of that discussion in years to come.
Looked at another way. If I were to select a world 13 for the 25-26 years I've been watching (I try not to dabble too much in rating players I never actually saw) I only end up with 3 Brits in it. I don't think any of them played any international RL in this millennium.
More to the point, none of the current crop even crossed my mind seriously to consider. The last who did was probably Sculthorpe, although he ends up well, well behind the likes of Hanley and Fittler.

I had lots of debates with myself. For instance, I can see people's point if they wanted SBW in there, but I've picked on actual achievement, not just potential, particularly in the international game. Anyway, Tallis would have mauled SBW and probably eaten him.

I would have had Laurie Daley before Schofield, Meninga, or Lockyer.

Fair enough. I thought about it.
Lots of debates like that. None of them involving English players.

| They were "different centres". Schofield, for all his world class displays there, was truly awful defensively. In fact, his defence consisted of "let try and intercept rather than tackle". He wasn't overly prolific at feeding his winger either.
Senior is vastly under rated by British fans. Gleeson always seemed to play very well in internationals. They were a good pairing.
But I see something special in Watkins. Comparing the full careers of retired internationals with a lad of his age isn't exactly equitable however I see no reason why he won't be something very special by the time he is done.

That's an impressive looking side. But would put Wally in at six ahead of anyone, and Tallis would have killed sbw.

| Interesting to see no love for Brad Fittler, who for me would be ahead of both Daley and Lockyer. An inspirational player, much in the Peacock mould in the way he could drag teams to victory.

I near-idolised Brad Fittler as a youth. He may count himself unfortunate to miss out to Lockyer and Hanley. Neither of whom I liked as much, but who I think were better players. Just.

Jet lag and a very slow iPad.
The vomiting part attracted my attention as I've been in India this week and vomiting was very much a part of my customer training agenda ( not by design). Curried chick peas for breakfast- maybe a mistake looking back.

Schofield's prime was as a SO where is hopeless defence wasn't as exposed. He had far more natural ability than Senior as a centre but his application, dedication & defence wasn't a patch. I saw him first hand in his prime on the 92 tour when he led GB to their finest hour (& 20) in my experience in Melbourne, as a SO.
Hanley is the best player I have seen but never as a centre.

Total rubbish. Schoey was a centre for his prime. Moved to 6 later on. This talk of poor defense, most uk and outside backs of that generation were average defenders. I agree D was not his strong point, nor was it his focus. You can coach D you can't coach class.

| He moved to SO at, I would guess, 22 or 23 y.o. He spent the vast majority of his Leeds career at SO. Interesting you excuse his terrible defence as most British centres were also crap at that time. That's OK then.

| Don't no why people are bagging schofield a defence, yes it was not his strong point but he was a capable defender, no lee Jackson or Offiah.
When he went to balmain they gave him a roaming attacking role and let Wayne Pearce defend in the centre position. For the last 20 years we have been possessed with out defending the Aussies rather than out attacking them.

I would say Schoey was 26/27 before he played 6 regular for Leeds. I recon Holroyd was the Leeds 6 before Schoey. I think Holroyd got the gig from 1990. Can anyone help with better Leeds history than me?

IIRC, Schoey started playing at 6 in the late 80's. Holroyd emerged well after. Schoey was often moved to 7 to accommodate him. Holroyd's debut was in a 46-all draw with Sheffield Eagles, a few of our team, including Schoey, were away on international duty.

Schoey was switched to stand off on the 1990 tour to NZ by mal Reilly, think he may have played a handful of games under David ward in 89-90. But the 90-91 season was his first full season at 6. And he won international player of the year. Man of steel and belated golden boot. Think he would have won golden boot in 92 as well.
Holroyd was 94 as was Francis cummins vassilakopuolous. And Paul Cook. Morley a year later.

Peacock, Noble and Crabtree have just given an expert anaiysis of Sinfields contribution at international level.

What Peacock, Noble and Crabtree said cannot be denied.....but neither can Sinfield's alarming lack of a pace to be playing in the backs. There was an opportunity he had to score in the first half where he was easily caught.
It's hooker/dummy half for me or not at all. Even his place kicking is not exceptional at the moment
