| Quote ="west_leeds_rhino"These riots just illustrate how morally broke Britain is today. I can't believe the sorts of people that have actually been arrested - school teachers, etc! Makes you wonder what their motivation was and perhaps what the media isn't telling us.
The politicians aren't helping either with the continuing trouble. They come out with wholly inappropriate comments sat up on their clouds, further alienating people from more disadvantaged backgrounds. To be fair, who are the politicians, police and media to cast judgement upon these people after the expenses and phone hacking scandals, etc.'"
I'm not a Cameron fan by a long, long stretch, but I found this hard to argue with:
Quote ="Shiny Dave""It is a complete lack of responsibility in parts of our society, people allowed to feel the world owes them something, that their rights outweigh their responsibilities and their actions do not have consequences. "'"
In fairness I haven't seen any reports of teachers being arrested. One guy works (or worked) in a primary school, but that doesn't make him a teacher.
Looting (especially looting without actual rioting to accompany it, which is what's happening in most places) has only one motivation. There's no protest here, no class issue, just morally bankrupt people who have no idea what it means to be disadvantaged seeing an opportunity to help themselves to some free stuff.

Yes, assumed that is why DC said "at 24hr notice" but you thought they could have sent a few over... even the sight of some parked up might put a few people off!

True. Assumptions and expectations on my part, although they would still have to be CRB checked and have a clean record to work in a school.

God no! I assumed quite the opposite in fact. I just didn't want you to think I was coming at the problem from some kind of shiny-faced Tory perspective.
Apologies if I in any way implied that I thought you might like David Cameron... I would not lower the tone of the debate in that way.

Actually, I will be after a new 3D TV and surround sound system fairly soon to put in the new extension, assuming I can still afford it when I have paid for my bloody windows and almost the same again just on the integral electric blinds!!! Wonderful but not a bargain!
I clearly need to go to Andy Gilders local as he might have some good leads!

I would say that the poor police performance has nothing to do with any proposed cuts. But has everything to do with a lack of direction and focus. They seem to have forgotten their main role is to protect the public and property.
They also seem to have forgotten the deterrent value of a strong visible presence on the streets.
While on the subject of cuts, its interesting to note that the current economic crisis is centred on countries that have chosen to defer tackling their sovereign debts.
The downgrading of the credit status of USA & Italy with news today that France, Belgium and even Germany may be downgraded rather shows the dangers of avoiding the difficult, unpopular yet necessary decisions to cut back on public services that are unaffordable.

T'was good, having two brother-in-laws in the police I hear lots of stories of how dumb some members of the public are and there was a prime example last night - one lad getting led out of a nightclub after being found with a six inch hunting knife hidden on him got followed by his mate who stopped the police officer and asked why he was being arrested, "Possesion of a knife" he got told, "Oh its not his knife, its mine" he said, "I gave it to him to look after", the officer thanked him for owning up to the offence and nicked him as well.

I heard that the weak response in London initially was because most of the Met had run up to throw a ring of steel around residential property in the Chipping Norton area. Just in case.

If you believe that social deprivation have nothing to do with social unrest then I suggest you go hide in the cellar for a long time for if you are happy to ignore the problem (as politicians seem to be happy to do) then it will return to bite you on the a[irs[/ie again and again.

That is a very different thing to saying these cuts have something to do with these riots though. The current round of cuts haven't bitten yet for most people. The social deprivation and inequality that has created the pre-conditions for unrest in these cities are the product, in my opinion, of issues which have been left to fester by governments for at least a couple of decades, probably more.

Nothing at all? There have been riots and looting, the causes will have been many and varied.
The warning (last year) came from the president of the Police Superintendents' Association to be met by a backbench Tory response (surprised at Philip Davies he normally talks a bit of sense from the right on law and order matters) was that such comments were 'irrational' and 'scaremongering' while the government response from the Home Secretary was that "the British public don't simply resort to unrest, or to violent unrest, in the face of challenging economic circumstances."
In one sense she is correct as most don't but there are a significant number who will and it's her job (at the moment) to guard against complacency and to ensure the general public are protected when the proverbial hits the fan.

As ever, the Daily Mail lands too far on the right by at least as wide a margin as some other publications land too far on the liberal left.
There's a worrying dichotomy emerging in the media. It's either all a matter of individual responsibility, or it's all society's fault.
The truth, I can't help feeling, lies somewhere in the middle.

What he said.
Social deprivation is obviously a major contributing factor, but not because the government who recently came in to power have made cuts that haven't even filtered down to some.
