| I am sure Salford can be successful ,especially if they manage to bend the salary cap rules without being caught out.

| They can if they can sustain the spend in the longer term. But given the constraints of the salary cap that will be a big a big ask. Oh and they also need to generate the income to be able to max out on the salary cap. Good luck to them.

After reading this on t'Beeb I was wondering what the learned members of SS think about Salfords attempt to buy success in the style of Chelsea & Man City.
Can it be done in RL?

How dare you come and ask leeds fans if you buy success!
well,it didnt work for us,but maybe salford will fare better.its going to be interesting to watch what happens.there are plenty of ways to manipulate the cap so i dont see that as too much of a problem.will be good for the game to have another team capable of mixing it for trophys.good luck to them.

| Short term, yes. Only sustainable if underpinned with a development set up to bring through as Leeds, Wigan & a couple of others do.

| I dont think they can they have bought some decent players but i doubt they'll get anymore out of the ageing Morley ,Puletua and Lummox that is Meli.
Hock is very hit and miss with plenty of losing the plot inbetween.
Chase although highly rated and capable of the sublime again lacks consistency imo.
Dont know a lot about most of their imports other than T.Smith can be ok but i rate Sau and will be interesting to see if the 2 Batley lads have an impact.
Add to that they already have some average players in their squad and not seen or heard that they have quality at Acadamy level its still a long way to go.
I still see an ordinary team if they lose 1 or 2 to injuries plus the fact they all have to gel and overcome the big money spent tag which we as Leeds fans saw far too often in years gone by.

| Short term success it won't be as the team needs to gel as said already, if they can keep the majority of the team together for the next 2 yrs then maybe into yr 3 they may make the playoffs and be competitive. But need to add some talented youngsters to progress over that same period as Morley, Puletua and Meli aint getting younger.

| Having Chase and Hock in your side is a mouthwatering prospect. But when you compliment it with aged rubbish, it kind of takes the shine off it.

Chase and Smith could be a cracking half back partnership f they gel.
No, they can't buy success. Not IMO.
Too many intangibles needed that can only come from building a team, not buying players.

| The whole point of the salary cap is to stop teams buying success (often beyond their means). Whether it works or not is another matter.

| It depends what you mean by success. To a degree Warrington have bought success, their academy only just starting to produce players.
But I don't think success for Salford is winning the GF. In the short to medium term it's to make the playoffs, then to be a consistent top half team. Their biggest success will come off the field in my opinion though. If they invest wisely and build the club and academy then that will lead them to success.

| I think they sound be applauded. I don't think they are trying to buy success, I think they are trying to get themselves in the game by getting a string squad. That squad will be about 6th I would guess. What it does is signal that they mean business and want to challenge. In years to come more plays will be attracted and over time more will be based on ambition and not money. It's a path Warrington embarked on a decade ago.
It's certainly better than clubs who never try and better themselves, and are content to be also range just making up the numbers

| I'll be surprised if they do
If he wants to buy success for me should focus on building up a youth set up and building on that so there is a future there but at moment buying up a dads army and Rangi Chase just doesn't seem such a good prospect

| I think you need both. Some big names to get the team competitive and bring extra fans in, then gradually move to a more sustainable situation where people are coming through from academy etc

| Salford U20s won the cup final last night so they must have some sort of decent academy set up.They have always developed good players but never had the finances to retain them and further develop them into the first team squad.

No. The club cost him nothing to buy and was debt free. Rangi Chase, Tim Smith and Gareth Hock were all free and Brian Noble and the rest of the 2013 playing squad were also earning zero this season.

| They haven't bought success. They still don't look like a team on paper that can consistently challenge the top clubs. What they have done is make significant improvements on what they currently have in a number of positions.
To be successful under the salary cap you probably will have to build up your supply of home-grown talent. But there's no reason at all to think that they're not doing that as well.
This recruitment is an exercise in bridging the gap from now until they can do something more sustainable I think. Good luck to them. They have good juniors, so some of the experienced players they've brought in will be good mentors to those kids too.
I only really question the Hock purchase. Is he someone who will contribute to a successful culture? Not so sure.
