| Nope, not for me. The team goes on and Sinfield will be replaced. A missing shirt number is a poor mark of respect in any case. Rename a stand, put up a statue, rename one of the approach roads to the ground; all better IMO.

| Bradford are the only team to do this in SL as far as I know - they retired the 21 shirt for a fair few years for Karl Fairbank but it seems to have come back into circulation more recently.
I can't find evidence of it anywhere but I can't get out of my head the thought that they retired a shirt after Peacock retired. Super League immortal Danny Peacock that is

| Nah I really hope we don't do this. As legendary as Peacock and Sinfield are, RL is a team game.
Somebody wore the 13 shirt before Sinfield and somebody will wear it after him.
I don't like the retiring the shirt thing, it's effectively saying that nobody will ever be as good as that player, which I don't think is a good thing to say to your team. I think you should use the shirts as a reward system. The best backrower gets the 13 shirt, the best prop the 10 shirt etc rather than effectively saying to up and coming props and backrowers that you're never going to be as good as them so don't even bother trying.

| I'd be happy to see this but understand why some are against it.
What i don't get is the tone of some of the posts i.e, "players come and go" or "Sinfield will be replaced"!!
Really is it that straight forward that we'll just "replace or he's the type of a player that will come and go" category?
Well imo that's wrong you don't replace the Clubs Greatest ever Captain and he certainly isn't just a player who'll come and go.
Yes the Team and Club will evolve but to describe Sinfields departure as above is playing down and to a point disrespectful towards his immense contribution to this Club as a player and as a Captain & the same goes for JP.
There's talk of a John Holmes statue and rightly so but for me there should also be a group one that includes Sinfield ,JP ,Mags ,Burrow ,Jjb & Kylie plus i'd go as far as renaming the SS after Sir Kev and or a Street.
It may seem over kill to some but this history those lads have created won't be repeated in a long long time if at all and i'd also like to see a lifetime tribute of some description to our winning Coaches with Mc.D at the forefront.

| probably not the best idea i,ve ever had, Nfl teams have much more numbers to choose from and retiring a number i.e. FAVRES no4 has no direct correlation with the next and ever greater QB Rodgers who is no12 , renaming the new southstsnd when its rebuilt would be another idea already mooted i would agree with

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Sir Kev and JP will be seen as all time Leeds greats. But it's early days to renaming streets and stands. IMO there is a reason why those types of honours are awarded after the passage of a little time (as you say there is TALK of a John Holmes statue). The delay allows the emotions of the now, time to settle and for a broader perspective to emerge of an individuals contribution in an historical context. I don't doubt that meaningful long term recognition will be awarded to KS & JP and rightly so, but maybe not just yet.

Of course he'll be replaced. I accept it's extremely unlikely we'll see a player with his qualities again in our lifetimes but he will be replaced (assuming McDermott doesn't decide to play a man short - not entirely out of the question ). I mean no disrespect whatsoever to Sinfield - hence the suggestions of naming a stand, an approach road or a statue. I doubt if any other posters were being disrespectful either.

Yes I agree Sinfield and the group you have just mentioned must have a permanent tribute on view a statue and not paid for by ans donations either ,paid for by the club.this retiring of numbers no who will notice in 30 40 years that Leeds don't have a 13 and why.NYYs will be into treble figures way they are going on

Rhimos, I was not meaning to be disrespectful in any way to the BEST skipper this club has ever had, We do though need to move on as a club. Retiring the shirt, for instance, sends out the wrong message in my humble opinion. We should be very proud and yes we do 'need to talk about Kevin' but come February it has to be about the here and now.

Certainly had the 13 shirt up to 1999, having taken over from Iestyn Harris who wore it in 1997. Prior to that, it might have been Mike Forshaw I think?

Oh aye yeah. I'd just blanked out a good few years, or a few bad years depending upon how you look at it.
BTW thanks a bunch. Remind me of Mike Forshaw's thankfully brief Leeds career made me throw up in my mouth.

Hey, in researching that I had to consider whether it might have been Marcus Vassilakopoulos - notable only for managing to get himself sent off in the Charity Shield.

And, if rumours are to be believed (and not doubt Gotcha can confirm as he will have likely discussed it with him) it was a calculated act due to being severely hungover.

The best thing I can remember about Marcus Vas was that there was a woman who used to phone in to radio Leeds (or it might have been Radio Rhino or whatever it was called) after every game singing his praises - me and my old man used to have a good chuckle at her expense every week.... She didn't sound like a young lass, we thought it must have been his Mum or a family member..... 'They need to give Marcus Vas more opportunity if they wanna win owt' was her general tone....
Jeez we had some desperate times before this generation of players.... That's something anyone who only started supporting Leeds during the glory years won't understand.... There was a time when Phil Hassan was one of our 'strike' players.... Where the Gibbons twins and Marvin Golden were regulars.... Where Karl Hall was a big signing...

| Maybe taking over a certain shirt number might inspire a player. Would Cuthbertson have had such a great MOS nominated year if he wasn't following in the footsteps of the legend of the 17 shirt Ian Kirke. If he can take that number over he can take Sinfield's number over
