| ... Or even 8 ..... IF scored from your own half of the field.
Think we all agree adventurous play should be encouraged rewarded. A Danny McGuire special has got to be worth more than a tedious predictable Cunningham type try.
pace and creative running beats kicking and barging....let's reflect that in the scoring.

| RL is an art of building pressure and field positon. Your idea will encourage stupidity and could make the game quite scrappy. You cannot beat a RL game where it is playing like a game of chess, slowly get those extra yards per set.

| Agree with Neil. Rugby League doesn't need rules to encourage attacking play, unlike Union.

| I appreciate there are skills in kicking, building pressure and indeed Cunningham type tries..... There are also skills in RU scrummaging....but which is better as a spectacle ? More points for long range tries ....Encouraging stupidity ? Or more potential excitement ?? I for one like to play chess ... But i ant gonna pay a lot (if anything at all) to watch it.

I like to watch a close fought game where the defences are on top. St Helens (10) vs Leeds (4) playoff 2007. Classic example of how a game of rugby league should be. A proper battle of attrition.

Agree with Neill, Rugby League has many aspects of play, forwards trys usually through strength, backs try's usually through speed. Don't think we could encourage/discourage one or the other, its all part of the package which makes it superior to Union.

Would you not want to further increase that superiority ?
Not sure how the extra points would discourage forward play..... No team would constantly ( foolishly ) be trying to score from long distance on every play......there is still merit in playing to the strengths of a dominant forward pack and kicking for position. Just think we should be aware of the creeping insidious effective march of 5 drives and a kick being enough to win games. Flair is being stifled in the mix of dominant defence safety first rugby. Let's try to encourage the greater taking of risks from the first half of the field and better reward those efforts.

Yeah, because defenders stacking in centre field don't create gaps for 'adventurous' tries out wide..........

If 'dominant defence' is ruining the game as a spectacle, all you need to do is speed the PTB up. Introduce 2 referees if necessary.

Does that help the Aussie game ? Where would we get the extra ref from ? We struggle enough as it is for quality.
Seems I am in the minority...... But how long did it take to accept the reaction to one point for a field goal ? Or the increase to four points for a try ? With hindsight both wise moves.

I disagree, the quality of referees is there. There are lots of grade 1 & 2 referees knocking around in the championship who could easily cope with reffing the PTB or the defensive line in a two-ref system. Fans being fans will always find something to criticise though.

Come on.... Get real. RL will only ever be a minority sport in this country enjoyed by the relative few. Face it. Not saying it's right. The two codes will converge and be one again....... Unless we are bold and continue to march ahead with rule changes thus maintain some distance.

It seems that there's a rule change of some description or other every year.

If it improves the game as a spectacle so be it ..... Was that not the whole idea for the game's bitter inception ? Get those paying spectators through the turnstiles to better support the professionals' wages ?

| So, as an example, a player who picks up a loose ball in his own half because an opposition attack breaks down and runs in a straight line down the pitch not having to beat any defenders would see his try rewarded more than if his team used skill and creativity to get round a defence and create a try with a move started in the opponents half?

I don't see how we can hope to attract new spectators when there is no consistency in the rules or application of them by the officials.

Just how many long supporting attendees know all the rules.... Rules that have been around for a very long time ?
Most are entirely ignorant. Some like me are not entirely familiar with all the rules..... And go along more to watch a hopefully entertaining match. I would suggest most pay their money for that element rather than for the purity of the ( non consistently anyway ) applied rules.

Yeah ! why not ? There is always the risk of luck winning tries in any game. Just look at the two wigan tries tonight that effectively won the game.
