Over the past few weeks, to get my fix, I've been watching this years play off matches, over and over again.
The highlights of each game for me were.(Apart from Sir Kev in every game)
1.V Wildcats....Zak Hardakers try.
2.V Catalans....Ryan Bailey's break (I didn't think he could run that far)


3.V PIES.........THE WHOLE TEAM.
4.V Wire......... see answer 3.

But, apart from Sir Kev, the one player who stood out during the play offs, was BRETT DELANEY. He seemed to be involved in every play, and every tackle made.
If our 2 new Australians are anything like as good then we're in for an even better season.
Well done....BRETT DELANEY.

I thought he was awful in the semi v wigan and his mistakes nearly cost Leeds the game.

He had a quiet first season with us but for me he is an integral part of the team now with his work ethic and consistency and he was very much a Mitch Achurch signing rather than a Brett Mullins.

Good player, but also one who seems to get what the Leeds ethos is all about. Not much of a centre as it turned out, but a very good back-rower.

Was always going to be a very effective 2nd rower.....I called it.

He's at home in the 2nd row.

Was a bit like Ablett when he was in the back row - got through an absolute tun of work but tended to go unnoticed.

Delaney has always struck me as one of those players that does exactly what the coach asks of him:

Tackle anything that moves - OK boss
When you have the ball run like fekk straight forward - OK boss
For Gods sake never pass - OK boss.

Agreed. Very ordinary player with an indifferent attitude over the course of 27 regular rounds of SL but is more effective and gets stuck in during the handful of other games which actually count for something.

I wasn't aware the ethos at Leeds had changed significantly over the past few years to warrant any new material on the topic. They still toss it off during the regular season and treat their supporter base to plenty of ordinary, below-par and downright lousy performances throughout the regular season. They only turn up to perform in the games which really count - apart from CC Finals which are a proven inconvenience in Leeds timing to peak at the right time.

Perhaps you could enlighten me on any recent modifications in the Leeds ethos which may have occurred?

I thought he was a colossus in the semi against Wigan. Sure, there were many handling errors attributed to him but most were poor judgment calls from the ref on ball steals IMO.

The rest of his game, tackling, work rate, leg drive etc was superb.

I completely agree and - more importantly - so did BMcD. If my lip-reading is correct, at full-time he said to Delaney that he "should've been standing there" - pointing to the spot where the MOTM presentation was taking place...

He's been our best forward ever since his move from the centres.

very solid runner, very depandable in defence - only thing i've noticed is at times lazy at first marker, but that's nit-picking

Actually you'd have to go far to find someone who worked as hard as Delaney througout the year for any club but that would be hard for you to spot when your sitting at home on a Friday night playing Scrabble with yourself. Whilst he may not be the most skillful Second Rower ever the guy constantly ran his blood to water and was my player of the year for Leeds.

If nothing's changed, then an insistence on commenting on it leads to just typing the same thing over and over again. Surely even you must be getting a bit bored of repeating yourself by now?

Extol the virtues of your team and players by all means - they are SL champions AGAIN after all - but there's always a need to temper that approach with the reality of the situation. There are no players at Leeds who constantly run their blood to water throughout the year as the overwhelming evidence of the teams indifferent ethos and approach towards regular season fixtures testify. Finishing 5th is no fluke.
