Sorry if this has been posted already I don't come here much, Rugby League Night on BBC4 tonight including 78 cup final. I 've never seen it on TV cause I was there, St Helens fans giving me toffees to stop shouting LEEDS and 2p off the Leeds fans for shouting, great day and great game. Somehow think giving money and toffees to an 8 year old would be frowned up these days without a CRB check, and the worlds a poorer place for it.

My first ever match, and taken onto the pitch at full time by David Ward.

Lucky bugger.......it was the two cup finals of 77 and 78 that persuaded my old now deceased dad to "stop throwing his money at the football prima donnas" and start taking me and my bro to watch a " cup winning side ".....little did he know what was to come. Still it got me hooked and I will always have the pleasure of knowing some of the all time greats.. ( my good christian stock mother was persuaded to go once....unfortunately we picked the visit of Hull FC to baptise her. .Suffice to say the fishwife foul language put her off ever attending again.....nothing ever changes in some cases. )

Took a big Union Jack flag with LEEDS in alternating blue and yellow letters made from cut up football shirts and when we got there we were stood in the predominantly St Helens end! Not a whiff of trouble. Great day out.

I wish I'd been able to go when you could stand at Wembley. The atmosphere must have been something else.

It was, mainly p1ss smells to be honest...

Nice to see the medical staff using the best in medical science technologies on injured players. The wet sponge and smelling salts seems to work a treat, why wasn't this used on Peacock and Burgess at Cas? In fact, bring back shoulder pads, wintergreen and half a ton of vaseline daubed on players knees.
