I think you always like what you heard as a kid so for me it'd be Wizzard, Slade, the various American 50s/60s crooners, plus Bowie 'n' Bing and that Greg Lake song.

The crooners I (Crosby, Martin, Nat King Cole, Ella Fizgerald etc) probably are the best songs performed by the best singers but its the way they make you feel, as do the 70s ones, that make them the best for you. They make you feel just a hint of the magic you felt as a child.

Carols don't get listened to as much which is a shame as I like them all.

Was saying to our lass yesterday that you can't get a perfect Christmas album. Whatever you get has some personal classics missing yet is still padded out with recent songs or, even worse, cover versions.

Its not christmas until you hear the opening line "And so this is christmas, and what have you done..."

Your right, it's a christmas eve song.

Most of them are sh.it and annoying. Infact - all of them are and annoying. None more so than the f-cking Pogues song. I don't mind Wizzard, Slade, Mud, Glitter, Stevens and co when I'm blitzed out on the sofa Xmas day. But thats because I'm blitzed out and its on quite loud resulting in not being able to listen to family members jive talk all day.

I said weeks ago that it ain't Christmas until someone says that.

And I still detest it.
Goodness knows what a decent singer like Kirsty McColl was thinking of, associating with such a bunch of talentless dissolutes.



Call me an old scrooge (you're an old scrooge) but most popular carols leave me cringing with the sheer crappy saccharine sentimentality of it all.
Especially ones containing words like donkey, drummer boy, Bethlehem, manger, sky, angels ... well, you get the picture.

Give me [iThe holly and the ivy[/i or [iIn the deep midwinter[/i ... or even Slade but please, please, please, no Johnny bleedin' Mathis or children's choirs.

And, no, I won't lighten up.
