Today's Sunday Mirror has an article about John Wilkin's opinion of the Super League.

He whinges once more about it not being fair that St. Helens weren't given the championship trophy for finishing top of the qualifying league.

Poor little lamb. Getting knocked out of the Challenge Cup has obviously brought back some painful memories.

I used to think he was a decent enough lad, he's gone down a lot in my estimations over the past year with spoiled child like rants like these.

Players, coaches and fans all know what the system is and the fact that to be champions you have to win the Grand Final.

I can understand why some people feel in a way it makes the regular season pointless but they know the system, no amount of complaining is going to change it so they should just put that effort into ensuring what they do during the regular season to finish top they manage to keep up when it really matters

Mine too. The few times I've seen him play lately he's been below par, which may be the reason for his petulance.

Either that, or he's moved to the Batley area and is spending his time around at Danny and Emmas.

If he played for a team capable of not choking in the game that mattered every year he'd have no reason to complain!

Leeds would love to be top. You've even got a thread on here speculating on your chances. Every team would love to be top. Every team would love to go to Wembley. All else is bollox.

There's a heap of jealousy on here of Saints because they've done it all. Not every year, but enough to mean that everyone celebrates when we're [inot[/i there. There is nothing more indicative of a top team than that.

Nope, but another of your fans would love to have both. Just because you're not bothered about top - assuming that's not just bravado (though you've every chance of reaching top) - doesn't mean loads of other Leeds fans wouldn't like to see their team top.

Sky will have their spin, just as on Boots'n'All on Wednesday they tried to diminish the importance of the Challenge Cup Final, but fans are fans just as they always have been and getting to Wembley, being called League Leaders - they are just as much a part of the season as being called The Champions. Not everyone will agree, but I'd bet my salary on over 90% doing so.

to finish top is great,shows consistency, however it's the game at old trafford that counts. i would have loved to get to wembley and win the cup,but i would rather have the title. if we finish top,great,but as long as finish in the top two i'm happy.

I agree with what you are saying to an extent but I know personally this season I would rather finish second in the table and win the Grand Final than finish top again but fall at the last hurdle.

We can bleat, as you call it, because we have been top for four years straight. That's an achievement. Had Leeds been top for four years straight, no doubt Jamie Peacock would be 'bleating' about the lack of official recognition. It is an acheivement to reach the top of the league, just as it is to win the Challenge Cup and to win the Grand Final. They are all achievements. And notice I'm still saying it's an achievement to win the Challenge Cup [ieven when Saints are out of it[/i. I am one of those fans capable of recognising achievement regardless of who achieves it. Hudds and Wire fans will have downplayed the Challenge Cup last year because they weren't in it and we had dominiated it but now we are out, their true feelings are showing through, just as yours would had you got to Wembley.

So stop being soft. John Wilkin isn't whinging. He is saying what lots and lots of fans think. Top of the league should be officially recognised just as the Challenge Cup and Grand Final are. Why should we let Sky dominate our thinking? We have three achievements in Superleague. They should all be a matter of professional pride and congratulation.

Meanwhile, I hope Wire win at Wembley!

Everyone celebrates because Hemmings, French, Davies, Clarke et al keep ranting on about how good you are. The ref's take far more backchat from your lot. Wilkin, Cunningham, Wellans are masters at the throwing arms up and whinging in the ref's face routine. Also, Wilkin appeared to take far too long getting off the player in the tackle - having timed it and watching a few of our re-runs we have been penalised for being involved in the tackle for a shorter time.

Take away in recent years what you have done WITHOUT breaking the salary cap - so really you have only achieved it by cheating!!

I never have or will play down the challenge cup,given the choice i prefer the championship although this year with it been 10yrs since we won it i'd of loved to of won the cup.
Finishing top does get recognition but the GF is the ultimate seasons prize and don't you see the irony of the chelping from JW when you've lost the last 2??

Besides, I actually disagree. Clarke loves Wigan and Stevo loves Leeds. I think what they do recognise is what they recognise in all teams - a good performance. When we perform well they have orgasms, but I don't hear any differently when other teams perform well. (Hemmings has forgotten you're called Leeds; he always calls you the champions, good corporate man that he is!

Glad you can acknowledge the importance of the Challenge Cup. Now that we're not in it, obviously! And no, there is no irony involved. The ethos at Saints for a while now has been to bring home as much silverware as possible. That's called a winning mentality. The hubcap is silverware, same as the Challenge Cup and Grand Final. It may not presently have the prestige of the other two but it may do so again in the future. Who knows with the RFL. They chop and change as much as the British weather.
