OK folks, with a mere week to go to one of the most planned and anticipated fixtures of the season, spiced up additionally by events 65 years previously (that's D-Day to you and me), what are your travel plans, flights and related ephemera related to getting over there, what you're going to do, where you might drink etc ?

not sure they will appreciate D-Day as much down there as much as they would in the north of France, just because they are down on the spanish border, away from the vast majority of the action!

August the 15th will be more pertinent to the south of France as that's when the Yanks and Free French landed there - despite Churchill's characteristic incompetence in trying to prevent the landing.

Head north of Toulouse and every village will have a memorial to those killed in June & July 1944 though. These were reprisals following resistance attacks on German troops trying to head north to join the fighting in Normandy - the resistance continually ambushed them to slow their advance and prevent their arrival in Normandy while the allied landing remained in the balance. Men, women, children. Go to Oradour-sur-Glane and theres a ruined town where an SS regiment killed virtually every inhabitant - women & children (as young as a few days old) burned alive inside a church.

Aside from helping allied airmen get over the border to Spain I don't know of a wole lot that happened near Perpignan.

fly to Girona on friday from donny, short drive up the coast and staying in the ibis. sunday driving down to canet plange for the night then home on monday

Out of Leeds/Bradford Friday 16.10 to Girona, transfer up to Perpignan with CST staying in Citea Perpignan. Fly back Sunday AM at 10.00. Home for Sunday lunch

I'm off Tuesday night / Wednesday morning via a flight from East Midlands to Girona and staying in Spain for a couple of days

In to France by train on Saturday morning

Back to Spain on the train on Sunday morning

Home to Doncaster International Airport on Monday afternoon from Girona.

Also staying in the Ibis, flying from Manc direct to Perpigian on Thur, home Sun. Cant wait for that first cold beer!

We are also in the Ibis. Anyone stayed there before. We went last year but stayed in hotel Kenedy

We've used it every year, and it's nice enough. Clean and comfortable, well situated for everywhere you want to get to, about 10 minutes walk from the Castille (sp?). There's now also a little supermarket opened just next door, for snacks and such.

The bar is about the same prices as all the other bars in Perpignan (i.e. expensive). The car park is lots of fun to drive into mind. It will test your skill as a driver.

I think the Ibis is going to be somewhat busy next weekend ...

Fly to Perpignan Thursday and back out Monday. Booked hotel for Saturday night in Perpgnan but nothing else. Getting a car and travelling around a bit more North for a change.

Im in the Ibis aswell. lucky for you lot im only there a night so you can relax the other few days you are there

I fly out Wednesday from Yeadon, coming back the following Friday. Spending most of that time in Spain (basically my annual holiday), with an overnight at the seemingly busy Ibis in Perpignan on the Saturday.

I am flying from Stansted to Perpignan going Friday coming back monday.

We are stayng in Hotel Ibis Prepignan Centre, looks like there will be a few of us there!!



Any one know any good places to drink? Ive heard there is a square with a few bars on which is supposed to be nice!

Not that bad, its not cheap but a really nice city so. The euro rate dosn't really help the bank balance but I would personally rather it be like it is rather than a cheap chavy place

Head for the Castillet (sp?) in the centre of town, near the canal. There's quite a few bars around there, including the main meeting point on the Saturday, Le Grand Cafe de la Post (or something like that).

Prices for beer are expensive, especially around the centre.

Aim to travel about to see a part of France I've not been to before.
Carcassonne one day and south along the coast on another.
Looking forward to the wine & the food. J'aime beaucoup la cuisine francaise.
I'm really looking forward to the trip & this weather is really getting me in the mood.
On a different track just booked to see Ry Cooder & Nick Lowe in concert in London. Can't wait one of my all-time musical heroes.
