| Be interesting to know to what extent other clubs play Russian roulette with the health of their players (assuming the level of risk is as high as portrayed in the article).

| That's really impressive, what great commitment from a professional guy. Wish him all the best for his recovery. Nice compassion displayed by the physio too lol.
Only one Chev Walker.

| A point I raised after the untimely death of Adam Watene.
How much medical testing do teams do that would pick up any kind of medical condition that exposes the player to undue risks to their long term health?
If a team uncovers something untoward, how much pressure is put on the player - particularly a "star" performer - to continue playing for the good of the team and put the needs of their employers ahead of their future medical wellbeing?

Quentin Pongia, he managed to put the entire League at risk. (Allegedly)

IIRC a form a hepatitis that was confirmed by the medical folks as being non-transferable in the context of professional sport, i.e. the amount of blood required to contract it went way beyond what you could conceivably expect to see on the field.

Yeah, nasty business. Blood borne illnesses like that spread like wildfire in contact sports.
Allegedly his employers knew of his condition and allowed him to play on to get them to the final of some cup or other.

| First thing I said after it happened was that it's probably down to a stress fracture. It was the ease with which it snapped that made me think.

| What kind of nugget plays on with that?
How desperate are Hull KR to expect a player to play with that?
How damaging is having a pain killing injection then playing with that?
Stupidity!

| Yes, it is brave but you have to ask why he was playing with it. Did he come to Hull KR from Bath with the fracture then? Or has it occured since then?

Rugby league is so tough i'd imagine players play with ''niggles'', and possibly even painkillers all the time.
I mean look at all the strapping they constantly have. You rarely see a player who doesn't have some white strapping somewhere on his body or legs or arms or hands.
I remember earlyer in the season ryan hall had some big strapping on his left thigh and he didn't seem to be running at full capacity.
It was like geez, is that kid fully fit, he injured?

Theres being tough and theres stupidity.
Remember this is ONLY a game.
I could understand this type of actions if lives were on the line, but for rugby league games? come on!

Horizontal transmission of hepatitis B virus among players of an American football team.Tobe K, Matsuura K, Ogura T, Tsuo Y, Iwasaki Y, Mizuno M, Yamamoto K, Higashi T, Tsuji T.
Health and Medical , Okayama University, Tsushima Naka 2-1-1, Okayama 700-8530, Japan.
Eleven cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (5 cases of acute hepatitis B and 6 of subclinical infection) were detected among 65 members of our university's American football team during a period of 19 months. All tested positive for antibody to the hepatitis B surface antigen (HB(s)Ag) or core antigen (HB(c)Ag). The incidence of HBV infection among team members (20.4%) was significantly higher (P<.001) than among students who tested positive for antibody to HB(s)Ag throughout the university (1.8%). We also detected a single carrier of hepatitis B e antigen (HB(e)Ag) on the team. Analysis of HB(s)Ag subtypes in 3 of 5 players with acute hepatitis B indicated that their subtype (adr) was identical to that of the HB(e)Ag carrier. All players with acute hepatitis B belonged to the same training group, which also included the HB(e)Ag carrier. Our analysis suggests that horizontal transmission of HBV can occur even in a sports team, probably due to contact with open wounds during training.

Thanks - had no idea the risk was so great. However, I thought immunisation against Hep B could be done fairly routinely?
