Just to put some realism to this. Put away in complete space and able to run in that space, would contribute at least 90-100 of those metres.
That aside, Halls work rate put players like Kirke to shame.

And when was he put away in "complete space"?
I wonder what Hall would achieve with a centre like yeaman inside him? More than 85 metres I suspect.

Briscoe might also have achieved more metres if he wasn't confronted with a terrier like Buderus leading the opposition kick-chase team. Ironically the best kick-chase of the night will likely as not feature in the missed tackle stat of the Leeds hooker despite it potentially saving several metres from the reply.

Agreed. But then again you can't compare to Hull from Friday. Look at the left hand side of Hull, and how few carries there is compared to the other side, and more importantly our centres.

Whereas I noted his 4 carries as poor, then saw 26 minutes and thought it improved it slightly, but was impressed by 21 tackles in that period, with 0 misses.
Taking into account a set of six generally lasts 60 seconds, and alternates, that averages out at close to 2 tackles a set whilst he was on the pitch. Not the stats of a coward, just some who knows where his strengths lie, as do (more importantly) the succession of successful coaches (plus McDermott) who have continued to utilise him in this way

| I've seen plenty of players willing to get stuck into opponents on defensive duties but too scared to take their lumps and take the ball up. It's very cowardly lion. Even with his 21 tackles he still had the lowest overall involvement of the 4 lads asked to play prop, as he always does,
It's a cyclical argument. In a team struggling to go forward if Shirke was willing to take us forward I am sure he would find himself on the pitch longer. Perhaps his game time is so limited because he's shown, week after week after week that he doesn't have the bottle to take the ball forward.
I like American Football. Perhaps there is a future for the cowardly lion to be purely a defensive player who we can sub off when is in possession?
I'm sorry, but 4 carries with such alarming regularity is completely indefensible of he spends any longer than 4 minutes on the pitch, which in my view, would be 4 minutes too long.

| When it comes to a bit of go forward, it is very evident that JP is literally carrying that pack on his own.
Practically double the yardage of TMFMISL. I hope Garry has someone very good in mind when JP does eventually call it a day.....

| Seems to me that Leeds coaching team don't read too much into OPTA stats nor heed Wayne Bennetts advice when selecting the squad each week.

And yet, in terms of involvement per minute on the pitch...
Bailey - 42 in 55 minutes
Peacock - 55 in 54 minutes
Lauitiiti - 26 in 33 minutes
Kirke - 25 in 26 minutes.
A very close second only to JP in terms of the four front rowers, and second overall in terms of involvement per minute amongst the Leeds forwards.

| Nobody that plays rugby league, especially as a forward, is a coward.

| Ablett again good effort.
I would agree with G1 though hall was great and didn't have alotof easy meters, and generally made his own yards rather than being put in lots of free space

| clearly four drives is what the coach wants, it may also be influenced by his place in the set of six - if he is told to drive it in for tackle 5 then quite often this year we have already lost the ball by then!
we dont actually have any forwards who regularly make yards, all of them are poor not jusr Mr Kirke

| It's not just about being told to do something by the coach though is it? Its also about recognising what's required in a set of 6, and most importantly of all for a prop (when on the field) making yourself available to take a drive. Especially in defensive sets near the line. I understand Kirke may not be a 'go to' prop near the opposition line, but when you're trying to make the hard yards going upfield from your own 25, its about getting yourself back and in position to help out. Tactics then are irrelevant - effort is what counts.

| Quote ="leicester_rhino"Whereas I noted his 4 carries as poor, then saw 26 minutes and thought it improved it slightly, but was impressed by 21 tackles in that period, with 0 misses.
Taking into account a set of six generally lasts 60 seconds, and alternates, that averages out at close to 2 tackles a set whilst he was on the pitch. Not the stats of a coward, just some who knows where his strengths lie, as do (more importantly) the succession of successful coaches (plus McDermott) who have continued to utilise him in this way'"
So by your your stats Kirke took 1 drive every 3.25 sets while he was on, considering he was a replacement and should come on to get stuck in and also normally does more minutes for those 4 drives, defensive master or not that's just madness, it's akin to playing with a forward down in attack and our forwards haven't been tearing it up in attack recently.

His low work rate in attack is not in dispute. What I'm trying to do is to look beyond some statistics and consider why a player has been selected by multiple coaches and formed part of a team that has won a series of Grand Finals.
What is clear is that he is a valued member of the squad by the people who know what it takes to run a sucessful team. He is well below par with the ball, but I believe he is above par for defence. He may not necessarily hurt people like Kylie, but what he does do is make the tackle nearly every time. I believe that his role in the team is to come on in the middle of each half, and tighten up the defence, whilst other people who are more attack focussed carry the ball. Defence is much more energy sapping than attack, and also errors in defence can hurt a lot more than a lack of meters with the ball. As is pointed out quite often, there are two sides to this game, and the team that concedes fewest points wins.
If he could be more effective in atatck and remain as effective in defence he'd be a different quality of player (more like JP). He's not, he has his strengths and he is playing to them, and save his breath for the job he's in the side to do.

Sorry but I still don't buy it, Peacock (who is in a different league to Kirke granted) has just come back from major knee surgery is still doing more tackles per minute with the other forwards not being far behind, Maybe a few years ago when Kylie, Peacock, Ellis etc were making very good yards then we could afford to carry a "defensive forward" but things have changed a lot since then.
I do think Kirke is a very good defender but his tackles are not effective enough or come in a ridiculous quantity to be able to justify his place in a struggling team imo.
If McD is saying to Kirke "you just tackle and let the other guys do the go forward" then he needs serious help because at present we have no go forward, this is not 2009.
