Rugby League Gets Big Government Handout
Many rugby league sides will have breathed a massive sigh of relief as the news broke overnight that the government had set aside a sum of £16 million to safeguard the sport through the Coronavirus pandemic.
RFL chairman Ralph Rimmer had been petitioning the government for support since the shutdown in mid-March, and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said that the government had made the move to ‘protect the entire sport’.

| good news. Will need to filter to about 30 clubs. Id still make them work for some of their deficits to strengthen them, the game needs more resillience and bailing them out 100% isnt the answer.

| Does anyone think the clubs in as bad a situation as GH constantly informs us we are, today he's saying we'r still in a perilous state, even with the loan. He's obviously a very astute buisnesman and part of me wants to believe he's just using such extreme terms to drum up and encourage as much financial support as possible. Or are we really in such a 'Perilous' state? I know we'r losing a lot of income but we'v got a majority owner sitting on 200 million, would he let the club go to bits? I dont know so interested to hear your views.
What do you think?

What do you think?'" They obviously won't let the club go to bits but the redevelopment was founded on people being crowded together to watch sporting events or crowded together for corporate or other functions in the new stand and pavilion. So the entire business model has been destroyed by this and they can't be sure when it will come back.
Caddick hasn't needed to put money into Leeds for a long, long time and it would be interesting if he desired to do so now. He/his family may be worth £200m but that doesn't mean he's got anything close to £200m in the bank, most will be the worth of his companies, including Leeds, which will have taken a hammering over the past couple of months and is probably tied up in trusts anyway.

| All clubs will be in bad state for next 18 months. Caddick or fans bailing club out is not a proper plan either.
Sadly the Rugby League Product is pretty poor compared to other sports despite all the 'best sport in the world' bravado. I think it was 15 years ago, but now over reffing, umpteen replays, disciplinary panel, ultra Conservative tactics are ruining the game. I honestly think this is a good opportunity to look at the whole thing and address a few things.....

Not true, it's how most sports clubs operate - this just makes the reliance on the owner more acute and tests whether their pockets are deep enough. If they are, then it just means they need to put more money in and is very much a proper plan and a proper solution.

Government crisis loans arnt a proper plan either, this isnt a time for proper plans, you take any help you can right now. If Caddick decided to pump a mill or two in, if it was needed, for the club to get through this in decent health, im sure the club and everyone with any affection or interest in the club would be delighted. Our club is one of the few who do have a proper plan either side of this pandemic, thats why, as ghost says, Caddick hasnt had to put money in for years, we'r a profit making buisness, its not like we'd be getting bailed out only for us to revert back to bad buisness practice, our buisness practice is very good to start with.
I know all clubs are going to be worse off for a while, I just wonder if GH goes out of his way to emphasise or slightly exaggerate how bad a situation the club is in, when he uses terms like perilous, part of me worries that the club really is going to struggle to come back from this, but the part of me thats seen how GH operates for decades feels like its GH maybe overplaying things to milk as much financial help as possible aswel as a bit of a bargaining tool with a view to the players. Things like when the players go back to full pay once the behind closed doors games start are going to cause a lot of debate and argument, GH already getting his groundwork in for when that argument comes wouldnt suprise me one bit.

Don't get me wrong, I love Rugby League, but that's because I grew up with it. Do people honestly believe it's a great spectacle though compared to great Saints and Rhino eras we've had?
For me there is no flow anymore due to upteen stoppages, and skill levels at an all time low. Can't remember the last person I've been able to introduce to the sport, who's not grown up with it.....

| I'm not very technical, but could the sport bring in some form of pay per view if they played to almost empty stadia?

Obviously that is your right, but I don’t understand it.
If that’s the only way to get the season going again I as a Rhinos fan and a RL fan would gladly pay to watch the games (not just rhinos games), why would the empty stadium stop you watching?

I imagine most fans would. The game is more important than the crowd - not really sure what it is you want from a game.

Don’t get me wrong the crowd can and does add a lot to the game, but the choice of watching live RL without a crowd or not watching at all, well theres only one winner.
I’ve missed it more than I thought I would.
