As far as I know you do not "need" to wear tartan for a Burns Supper. I assume you are not a Scot otherwise you would have the full kit. If you really want to pass yourself off as a Scot then offer to say the 'Selkirk Grace' before the supper. If you can pull this off with a Lowlands Scots dialect you will earn yourself a few extra drams of the single malt and possibly a right to vote in the distant Scottish referendum!
On the other hand it could be more fun to go with a Union Jack bow tie and drape yourself in the St Geoge's Cross
