| Soss, I am pretty sure it was just a wind up by Starbug in the first instance and was no doubt prompted by recent accusations relating to visits to the LSV.
And were it true, the reason you would have heard nothing is because there were not enough Leigh fans there to be heard above the seagulls, nevermind be heard above our lot.

| On saturday there were chants directed at Brett Mc Dermott , ok so maybe those chants didn't actually upset him , but what if say he had been a coloured person , or ' Gay ' maybe , what would have been the outcome ?
What if they are Homophobic chants heard at the Racecourse ground in Wrexham , who gets fined ?

You lot , YOU LOT , we didn't hear you lot all game , there were only around a hundred leythers there on saturday , but we made more noise than the 2,267 Barrow fans , and yes Brett did hear the ' abuse ' given to him , he rubbed his belly in reply

Again I ask WHAT IS YOUR POINT????
You compared a song sung by 99.9% of all clubs that isnt abusive, racist or homophobic so no action was needed by the stewards at Barrow. If you had been removed for singing "who ate all the pies" you would be on here complaining of the "over reaction" of the Barrow stewards. You cant have it both ways!
The fine was given for the lack of action taken by the club! If the club had acted in a positve manner the fine would not have been levied and the morons arrested or at the very least removed from the ground.

| I think you're missing the gag soss.
If LEIGH fans were singing racist chants at BARROW, and the BARROW stewards didn't acted on it, who should get the fine?
It's all a hypothetical question i believe he's asking, replace Leigh with Halifax and Barrow with Keighley if you must, but what would you suggest should happen?

I'm not thick I know what the fine was all about. My point is why should any club be fined for away fans singing a non offensive song as per his original post! Not a hypothetical comment or he would have stated a "what if we sang a racist song at Barrow" but he didnt. I have stated what should happen quite clearly.
If any club has racial, homophobic or offensive supporters (home or away) it should be delt with. It was not in that case so the club was fined.

Are you suggesting that all chants are to be punished by fines, if so say goodby to the game quicker than the RFL can say "closed SL what a good idea". If the Leigh fans sang this song (must have been a whisper) I would take no offence and would actually find it quite funny. There is a BIG difference between banter and abuse.

To be fair, the above is a hypothetical question which he did ask.
Just to clarify, no ones roundly calling you an idiot or having a go at Barrow here Soss, it's just an open ended question that to be right, still hasn't been answered by your self or anyone.
I'll give it a go though....
In my opinion, if clear evidence suggests racist/homophoebic chants were coming from the away end/away fans, then that club (the chanters club) should get fined. As we know however, with stands being full of both sets and it being a minority, no club should be fined (ala Leigh vs Halifax). However (MkII), the club must be seen to be acting on these individuals either by throwing some out, or by having more stewards were problems were sighted in a previous game. Something which Halifax for example, didn't do last year with some of the bottle throwers at the back of the South Stand, yet game after game no steward showed in that spot. Perhaps we should have been fined or warned (and knowing our luck, now i've posted this on a messageboard, we probably will be ). For what it's worth, with all mitigating circumstances around issues like these, i think Cas were harshly treated with their fine.

| The fine was not a direct result of the chants but the lack of action by the club to stop it. Did Cas have any warning as to the stewarding of the ground from previous games? If so the fine is deserved if not it does seem harsh, however the rules are there to be followed and maybe this is a wakeup call for some clubs.
I personally believe that it is the responsibility of the home club to police the supporters and if abuse is evident or reported then procedures should be in place to deal with the problem. Just as there are for evacuation and medical emergencies.
If the club does nothing and there is documented evidence of their lack of action then they should be fined. The term "as far as reasonably practicable" is in the rules as you can not expect stewards to be put in a position where they could be physically abused. That is why there are police at the games.
As for the Wrexham scenario; it is the responsibility of the club hosting the game no matter who owns the ground if that was the question.

| To return to the hypothetical question...
The precedent is already set in football.
It will always be the club to whom the fans belong that is punished. The alternative would encourage such behaviour where fierce rivalries exist.
With regards to the fine for Cas, the justification for it was the clubs lack of action to address the issue by identifying and excluding fans with the evidence available.
I think Cas were harshly treated for what was an isolated incident, I think the RFL should have been stronger and made a statement that it was just that and that it would be treated as such. Instead they panicked at the potential for negative publicity and over reacted, the impression has now been given that there is a problem within the game.
Gareth Thomas (with the assistance of his agent) has also manipulated the situation. His statement which included the line "something had to be done" in the context of homophobia in RL as opposed to the incident itself does him no credit. An unpleasant fact of life is that alternative lifestyles will always attract negative/abusive comments from certain people (please note I did not say "lifestyle choice"icon_wink.gif. Thats not to say that it is acceptable, however I do not accept that Rugby League fans have an issue with homophobia or racism anymore than any other cross section of society and would go as far as to say it is more accepting and tolerant than most.

| Without wishing to be offensive to anyone, isn't it ironic that if the fans shouted at a heterosexual player "Hey, soandso, you big puff!" it would not be considered particularly offensive and no action would be taken but to shout the same thing at a player who actually is homosexual is considered offensive and demands action.

Aye, i've always thought the same. Every set of fans have been calling and chanting about other players being gay for years, our own 'Barmy' Army infamously chanting the very witty 'Holroyd is a homosexual' for years at his time at Doncaster for example. Chanting 'Thomas is a homosexual' now gets you a fine, even though factually correct. Jokes aside, always the wrong thing to chant at anyone anyway, infact swearing and calling any rugby player a big jessy is just daft anyway, when they're clearly not.
