| Quote ="Nat (Rugby_Aholic)"The story is that you are gullible enough to believe everything you read and hear. 70% attendance rise will include 35% free tickets. What does the lottery cost per week, if it is the same as us then it is £1. So this lottery is taking on 600 new people a week? I smell some tax dodging going on here.'"
Barrow do not provide free tickets for games other than complimentary tickets for sponsors and players. They also do not provide major concessions other than the standard discounts for pensioners, children and the Junior Raiders club. The only others are that the local amateur clubs are entitled to tickets at a tenner each, tho I think the clubs must buy these prior to selling on to their players.
The Barrow Rugby lottery is the second largest lottery in the country and was the largest up until the introduction of the National Lottery. The statement was that it has recently increased by 600 members and more are joining each week, not 600 per week. I wish it was 600 per week tho.
I am reasonably comfortable with the operating figures for last year as I would suggest that they are pretty good for the Championship in the current economic climate. I would also expect that the expenditure this year is within the clubs financial limits as the board are very proud of their record of having never been in administration or receivership and learned their lesson in the 80's when it was a close run thing whether the club would survive the attentions of Her Majesties Revenue Service. I believe Wakey are suffering their not so subtle probings at the moment!
As one of you posted, what are Fax's accounts like for that period? Fairly similar I would have thought. At least it aint a million loss like Widnes.

So ... when Barrow don't retain their trophy in a year or 2's time and you get some pist up dockers prodding Des in the chest wanting to know why, let's hope for your sakes Old Des don't take his bat 'n' ball home.'"
Talk about changing your tune.
First we get all the accusations that Des bankrolls the entire club and if he walked we'd all be doomed, and then when you 'reveal' that he has lent the club money we're still doomed.
Again, you speak from a real position of ignorance.
The fact is that by the start of the 2010 season the increase in lottery stakeholders will cover the £80K we 'owe' Des.
Let's look at which Championship clubs have been financially impotent in the last few years ...
Widnes
Gateshead
Oldham
Doncaster (x2)
Rochdale
oh and Fax
On top of those, several other clubs including Haven, Workington, Blackpool and others have, or still are, sailing very close to the wind financially.
Having a managed debt and overdraft is completely normal in business. Note the word MANAGED.

| this is what tonyfax found out & posted on here start of Oct.
Quote ="Tony Fax"Seeing that the accounts are available for public inspection I cannot see any reason why they cannot be discussed on here, but please correct me if I'm not allowed to do so.
The accounts for the year ended 30 November 2008 have recently been filed, and because the company is small, only abbrieviated accounts showing the balance sheet, and excluding the profit & loss account, need be filed. But you can tell if the company has made or lost money by comparing the profit & loss reserves with the previous year.
In the case of Halifax RL ... the P & L reserves are EXACTLY the same as last year, obviously meaning the company broke even for the year ended 2008. "EXACTLY"????!!! you ask. Yes, EXACTLY. So we didn't lose money for the last reported year ... that's all we need to know
Anyway .... just to confirm that Widnes lost £986,380 for the year ended November 2008 as discussed on here several weeks ago, and that does NOT include the £912k spent on intangible & tangible assets as some folk seemed to believe, but the loss DOES include just over £200k depreciation on these assets.
And in November 2008 we were richer than Widnes

To post figures exactly the same , and to suggest the club broke exactly even without somebody putting money in to balance the figures up is incredible , if you believe that you also believe in the tooth fairy and that a man in a red suit delivers those pressies on Xmas morning
The figures posted for Barrow are fairly good reading if correct

Last years' accounts are pretty meaningless, especially as .....
Crowds in 2009 were up almost 70%,
Have a turnover of £800K+ in 2009 to-date (season tickets have yet to go on sale which will greatly increase this figure),
We got to 2 finals in 2009 and topped the league,
Are due to post a £100K+ profit in 2009,
Have, in the last 8 weeks, increased the club lottery income by £600 a week (£30K PA), a figure that is still growing weekly.
On top of this, the club has NEVER been been wound-up, even during the very dark days of the mid/late 90's and we own land worth approx £5M.
Regardless of DJ's input, we are more financially sound than 95% of Pro RL clubs - including most SL clubs. The most important thing is that the RFL know this as well.
No story here I'm afraid.'"
Okay we bow to your superior knowledge BUT look at the state of your club pre Des Johnson and you may see why we think your meteoric rise has something to do with Mr Moneybags.
Jealous? Yes a bit but I won't be when he has gone and HE WILL one day.
I prefer to have a stable position from our fans, lottery and sponsors and not to rely on a Chairman on an ego trip.

All chairmen leave eventually and probably 90 % of them are tipping in every year , even yours , if the figures ' posted ' are true then Barrow are very close to being in a stable position
Tony fax posted earlier that Des has ' lent ' the club money , not given it , which will be true , but the same will apply to Leigh , Widnes and all the other clubs including Fax , if Fax have broken even for the second year running , somebody has lent them money to do that , as Tonyfax said , " That is all we need to know " , which is true , but would you not rather know how much has been lent to the club to achieve this ?
As for the ' what happens if they dont win the league next year and the fans get ' shirty ' , well that also can apply to any club , as was witnessed after the NRC semi and the GF losses

| Having spoken to the Barrow lottery manager earlier this week, I can confirm that they have recruited over 600 members on thier lottery in the last couple of weeks.
With a membership of 6,000 they do indeed have a lottery that they can be very proud of.
The promotion involved everybody in the club, from the chairman to the supportes who really backed thier club by recruiting new members.
With all this extra income it really does give them an advantage over thier rivals, including us unfortunately.
Credit must go to Barrow for this.
Cheers
Richard

| Barrows benefit is most other clubs problem,i.e. Barrow are geographically very isolated, whereas Fax,Widnes,Leigh etc are surrounded by other clubs in all types of sport.
Barrow will generate a massive feel good factor in the Town if they keep up the momentum and carry on winning this season,I can easily see their crowds growing significantly. The team will be the focus of pride for the whole town and yes buying lottery tickets helps the people become part of the glory, that has been a long time coming.
A lot of clubs have sole benefactors and Barrow just happen to have one who likes to let people know he is the boss, some other Chairman stay in the background, all though could get fed up and call in their loans, has as happened on many occassions.

Estimated turnover for 2009 (+/- 10% accurate I would think) .....
2,300 average fans x 12 homes games (10 league + 2 NR Cup) @ £8 = :22pm8cmk£220,800:22pm8cmk
5 Split gates @ 3,000 fans ave (including Wigan sellout) @ £8 = :22pm8cmk£60,000:22pm8cmk
Corporate boxes (7 per match @ £400 each) = £2,800 per match x 15 matches = :22pm8cmk£42,000:22pm8cmk
Club sponsorship - not sure but :22pm8cmk£30,000+:22pm8cmk I would think
Prize money - certainly over :22pm8cmk£120,000:22pm8cmk
Bar/refreshment/merchandise - certainly over :22pm8cmk£50,000:22pm8cmk
Goldrush Lottery - £6,000 per week = :22pm8cmk£312,000:22pm8cmk
:22pm8cmkTOTAL - £834,800

I couldnt agree more. What Barrow do is their business and, like all clubs, they are subject to audit.
What they have done is a credit to the whole set up there and for that I applaud them, but would more like to concentrate on what is going on in our neck of the woods.

| I originally posted as the thread was named 'Barrow' which then went on to question the clubs financial credibility.
I hope people are starting to realise that the club is very sound financially with or without DJ's money.
I can't wait until we can start talking about the actual rugby again !! Should be a huge crowd at Craven Park for the visit of Stanley's army !!

Great word 'alledgedly'.
Roughly translated means 'I made it up', or 'I heard it down the pub'.
