| Quote ="Greg Florimos Boots"What actually happened? What is the actual rule? Ive trawled through the RFL website and i cant find it anywhere.
Whenever i have seen it happen before it has always been a case of whoever wins the toss decides whether to recieve the ball or not and the other team then decides which way they will play. Is this not the case now? Gareth Hewer can be hear to say that he dosnt know what the confusion is all about and also mentions that MC isnt happy about it. Anyone shed any light on the matter.
It should probably be on the RFL website for everyone to see, maybe they should add some tips for Fev as well about how to do well in GP situations.
'"
its also the same rule in many other sports around the world.
i too want the ref investigating for saying that and doing it if infact his words are wrong.
and even if he just got it wrong then something should be done as he should know such a basic rule as everyone else seemed to do

| What's written in the Aus rulebook? Surely with it happening almost weekly they'll have a way of doing it which I presume is international.

| This is what I have found:
=#0000FFThe kick off is a place kick from the centre of the halfway line. The team which loses the toss for choice of ends kicks off to start the first half of the game and their opponents kick off to start the second half.
[iTaken from the Laws of the Game on the RFL website under section 8, kick-off and drop out.[/i
So, as far as I can see it from that above Featherstone won the toss and opted to play downhill meaning Fax had to kick off uphill. Which is what happened.

| That doesn't make sense though because Fev won both the final and semi toss and CHOSE to recieve the ball. According to that they were always going to get it anyway so should have just chosen ends. All a means to the same end but you can see the confusion.

| Actually forget that. We got the ball in the final haha. Doh!
Edit: Actually no (clearly just talking to myself now ) There was that debate amoung fans after Fev chose to kick it to us which some Fev fans didn't agree with, therefore that doesn't fit in with the above rule either. I'll leave it there for now I think.

| TS. i have also found this in the RFL laws of the game under section 5 - start of play
=#0040FFThe captains of the two teams shall toss the coin in the presence of the referee. The captain winning the toss shall decide to either kick off or choose which end his team shall defend. The losing captain shall take the other of the alternatives.
So going by this Fev won the toss and elected to play down hill therefore fax had the opportunity to kick or received if i have got this right

You have got it right. Nice one for finding this. I went for the obvious title of 'kick-off', not expecting it to be elsewhere. It then shows a conflict in the Laws of the Game pertaining to this matter. Hewer was correct in respect of the Law I found, and wrong with respect to the one you found.

| The referee was correct in thursday's instance, I have it on very good authority. Unfortunately, NEITHER club had been informed of the rule change as I understand it.

So what is the new ruling? The team that wins the toss automatically recieves the ball but gets to pick which end to attack?

OK, considering that my old man is a current RFL match commissioner, and the fact that I personally know a couple of the full time referees and a couple at championship grade, and Ian McGregor & Colin Morriss ( both current RFL matchday officials in different capacities ) are also friends who I discuss rugby league in general with regularly.
Now I'm not gonna disclose on an internet forum which of these people told me, but I did refer to another one of the above to confirm this particular situation.
You believe what you like, read today's courier if you need to, but I'm telling you that the referee was correct. I also stand by my statement that he's the best ref at this level and I consider him better than at least a couple in full time RFL employment. Sadly, the lure of him going full time isn't enough to draw him away from his job, he has potential to be in the top three or four refs in our country.

Go to say I agree about Hewer.. rarely makes a mistake.
Now the video ref last Thursday what was he thinking giving the try that was clearly short of the line..!?

| MM i don't doubt you but to go on one is a bit daft TBH.....all you needed to say was you have spoken to some RFL officials. P.S i am also friends with various match officials at different levels of the game and i was in the same society as Mr McGregor and Mr Morris so know them both well.
I have read the courier and i am not doubting that he got it right all i was showing in my original post is that the laws of the game on the web site show that if we go by what i found the ruling is wrong where as someone else has pointed out that in another part he was right.
Whenever i refereed i always went by the coin toss as per section 5 and not as per section 8 and no one ever complained about this to me.

Why? If the rule has been changed like you say then whats it matter who told you? From reading the courier it dosnt appear that there has been any change to the rule and it is all dependent on if the winners of the toss decide to kick off or not as per last seasons GF.
