Tuesday 6th May 2014
Club StatementStory in brief:
Featherstone Set To Spend Their Way Out Of The Championship
Following years of patience in the Championship all Featherstone fans will be delighted to wake up with the news that substantial investors will join Featherstone Rovers from immediate effect.
The new investors wish to remain anonymous for now have offered substantial investment for Featherstone Rovers to compete in Super League. The amount of investment will remain disclosed but its thought to be a number of millions over a 5-year period. The club has already begun to spend funds prudently.
Majority Shareholder of Featherstone Rovers Feisal Nahaboo who is acting as advisor to the club has made the following statement.
Feisal Nahaboo said "Rightfully or wrongfully at the start of the season the club had made the decision to strike at the end of the season to prepare a Super League strength squad to compete next season. Following back to back defeats to Leigh Centurions we've realised we are no longer the dominant force outside Super League so the club has made the decision to raise the standards for all Championship clubs with imminent investment both on and off the field.
"The club will immediately show its intention by appointing leading coaching staff and will then follow-up by announcing new squad members. The club will not be selling its leading players and key squad members will be offered 2 to 3 year contract extensions. The club will announce those deals 'in one go' over the next few weeks. During the transition the club will have a strict policy of no press coverage for 4 weeks and we ask all press to respect this decision. Unlike some, this club will not be advertising its plan during execution.
"There are no egos at Featherstone Rovers, just pure grit and determination to succeed. In addition, we ask all leading agents to come forward with players available who have substantial ambition. We ask our fans to allow club officials to do their work and embrace the changes and not to question their judgements but to live the dream.
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the RFL and SKY with regards to their new rules allowing clubs like Featherstone Rovers to invest and play for Super League status. It seems we won the league 4 years on a trot in vein, but we will take this experience, wisdom and knowledge to compete at the highest level possible.
"The board has been told that it must challenge for top 4 Super League position within the next few years. We would like to thank Mark Campbell for his immense work in building the club to a level which has attracted investors to come in and take the club to the next level. His work ethic and love for the club is exemplary and he will play an important role in the club whilst new investors will come in. The club has been told it must finish in the top 2 this year and compete for the Grand Final at any cost.
"We would finally like to thank the entire squad. They have been the best group outside Super League. Leigh may have taken the advantage but they have won nothing as of yet. Having said that we congratulate them in their own ambition. It is exciting times ahead and we are delighted to now have a real say in this sport.'"
Basically he is getting ed off that he has invested his own money and not been able to buy his way into Super League so far. Now he is claiming other investors have come in and threatened to sack everyone if they dont finish in the top four of SL within "a few years". The man is disillusion, I really think we dodged a bullet when he left us. Yes if these millions are true then that is good for them, but I have heard some of the stories from his time at Fax and I believe it is all nonsense.
P.S. If these new squad members he speaks of are brought in with blatant disregard for the salary cap then the RFL must take immediate action and expel them from the play-offs.

| Couple of things, I'd that the right 'vein' and it looks like it's Sky along with the RFL who now make the rules, no surprise there I guess.

| I have to agree with the fact that having 10 or 12 small businessmen who are willing to put their money into a club makes far more sense than having one money man as when he walks away you are left in a mess .However not sure it would work in the same way at Fev as it does at Leigh as he would still want to call the shots wouldn`t he .
I also noticed he had used the wrong "vein " that spelling is about blood vessels and such and could imply "blood letting" where as "in vain" means to no avail or without success. Oh hang on a minute maybe he used it to cover all eventualities .

| Fev's dominance and performance on the field the last few years has to be applauded. Leigh this year have set their stall out to dominate when it matters. But my concern is that neither have the scope or catchment area to have the crowds to be anything like a force or even compete in Super League.
No disrespect to Fev but I dare say the club and its social facilities are one of the main focal points of the town; and that is why they are such a force in the championship. But i feel there just aren’t enough people in the town (approx. 16,000) to see the massive increase that will be needed to support a SL team. As for Leigh the town is about 2/3 times larger than Fev but then is affected by Wigan being right on their doorstep.
In fax we have a population of about 5 times Fev, this doesn’t include the full borough of Calderdale which would more than double this again. But our problem is the competition from Huddersfield and Bradford for RL fans in the region. Our only hope would be the demise of one of these clubs whilst at the same time we become a dominant force along with some very good marketing as was the case with Bradford at the start of the SL era. But recent experience says we are not very clever at marketing and we are a country mile off being anything like dominant on the pitch.

| We may be a much bigger town but nobody seems to give a damn. London Broncos have a massive catchment area but it is irrelevant if you cannot generate the interest.

| Totally agree - no one does seem interested. With 2 SL teams within spitting difference then the modern glory hunting RL fan will go there instead. And even our diehards are dwindling away with the boring spectacle we have been served up the last few years.
The fact that Leigh and Fev are attracting significantly more fans as a % of population is a credit to them, although a winning team has somewhat helped that. I also think the community aspect has played a big part for Fev and is always likely do so in a small town. But will they increase crowds significantly enough in SL? If they can do that then it would be a great achievement and good luck to them.

| Personally, I'd love someone at our club to throw their toys, say second in the league is not good enough and then secure investment to fund a push to top four in super league and tell the whole world he was on a mission. What a buzz. All eyes on Fev.
Better than sitting around doing nothing and hoping no one notices!
A bit of green eyed monster here, we'd love it if someone at Fax did this!

| At what cost? Simple fact is Fev are never going to sustainably get to top 4 of SL, therefore what happens when Faisal gets bored of injecting 'millions' into Fev just to see them struggle to maintain a mid table finish in SL? Their inevitable financial collapse will make Bradford look like a low key afair. In the relentless pursuit of success he will likely sack several coaches, club staff, directors, chairman etc and gut the heart and sole of the club. We have already seen an example of this with Bastian, they brought him in to develop a young squad for SL in two or three years, six months later and he is out the door for not getting immediate success from the assembled young team.
The best owner in the modern game in my opinion is Steve O'Conner at Widnes. He quietly sits in the background, hiring the right people and giving them time, investing money where needed. That is the best approach to gain continued success in SL. Not this instant success seeking we see from Naboo and Koucash.

I don't read too much in to the size of population per town,I live in wakefield and you will find fans of all 3 clubs scattered round all the wakefield postcode and sadly a lot of rhinos too..
My point is although a small town if they become successful the larger area is huge..

| Personally I think Fev deserve a shot at SL, they have been the best and most consistent team in the Championship, over the last few years and clearly now have the financial clout to go for it. (Ironic that Faisal was at Fax for a year then disappeared-wonder what happened there?)
I went to a meeting recently where KH and Michael Steele discussed the new structure and I came away with a distinct feeling we couldn't afford to compete with both Fev and Leigh and it now looks as though this is coming to fruition.
Only time will tell but the BOD at Fax need to take up the challenge pretty quickly, or talk to us diehards to manage our expectations, or we are going to get left behind.

Nobody 'deserves' a shot at SL they have to earn it and Fev have in a way by finishing as league leaders 4 years on the trot but that was then and this is now so they will have to earn it all over again by trying to win their way to promotion with the new system next season.
I share your concerns though and am very worried that we ARE getting left behind, Fev have been in front of us on and off the pitch for years and still are plus now Leigh.
With no sugar Daddy we will just drift along and our fanbase is ever shrinking its a downward spiral.
My question about this announcement is why Fev? No offence Fev fans but you must admit you are not the most glamorous club or town nor will you ever be one of the big clubs in the SL so why you???

You just need to go back to 2005 to realise Leigh can make it to SL on the attendance front. We had 3200 hardcore fans who watch the side get battered inside and out in a concrete cauldron known as Hilton Park !
It has taken a while for fans like myself to accept LSV. I still think about the 80's seeing Leigh play Wigan with 13000 speccies on !! It is warning to me though and the day is far mor than 80 mins on a Rugby pitch.
BUT - Having Wigan, Warrington, St Helens, Salford and Widnes is not really a bad thing to have surly ?? Our gates will double (probably treble against Wigan and Warrington) and living in Warrington, I know what it means to them to have Leigh by their sides.
The new P@R proposals is a little bit of a red herring, and it will still be awfully difficult for an ex championship side to get promoted. All we wanted was a chance. All the top Champioship sides need to embrace that and show some ambition. Without that link, we would be no more !

Pretty much in agreement with that Snowy.
It will be tough for the Championship clubs to win through the play off system against SL opposition, even though there is more money available for the top 2 there is still a significant gap and the SL sides will have been full time for sometime giving them another edge.
The Faisal approach could well redress the balance as the cash coming from Central Funding will in Fev's case be supplemented by a significant amount from himself and the other proposed backers.
Some of the less well off SL clubs who can't spend up to the cap may well be reeled in and surpassed by a big spending Championship club.
Nothing is ever guaranteed and it will come down to who is in it for the long haul.
Another scenario is, should any of the existing SL clubs fall into difficulties then the door may well be open for a well off and well placed Championship club to take their place more easily if they keep SL at the proposed 12 clubs if that were to happen.

| As I have said on another forum people alway look at the negative side to things in RL when something like this happens I remember when Probiz came to Fev many people said he won't stop he will promise things and leave Last year he made an announcement that he would move us forward and invest in shares at the club to improve us. What he did was give us £300 000 to build at centre of excellence and it happened He also said he wanted us to be the best outside S/L so we could challenge to go up which we have been up to this season. The club employed a coach on recommendation from people within RL and it hasn't worked ( unfair to comment why when the coach cannot answer just ask Tommy Saxton) He was also allowed to bring his own players in and release the ones he thought wasn't good enough which he did wrong What impresses me is that when things are not right the BOD have acted to sort it out and not sat back and watch the club slowly fall backwards If he continues to invest and bring others in tell me which club wouldn't want that although money doesn't buy success it is important to move things forward I will leave it to him he has been here a few year now and he is a person who aims high and wants to be the best at everything he has already pumped money into the club and looks like he wants to continue What I do hope it that more clubs can attract these type of people and get the game to become stronger. We need strong sides in the championship for next year Leigh have set the pace lets all try to catch them up Although 2015 playoffs will be difficult get that 5th place in the 8 and play in the final for a place in S/L owt could happen

I agree JT and I can't see anything negative about what Fev have done over the last few years and what they are doing now, they are showing consistent commitment over a long period of time and now there is a pathway they are in a good position to take the next step and I for one are looking forward to the play off's in 2015.

| The Champioship is a fantastic league, enjoyed by the most loyal fans in Rugby League.
SL is a dream. If Leigh fulfill that, good on them. If they don't, so what !
What this division can boast is stability. Franchising has caused some clubs in SL to completely self distruct which is completely the opposite to what it should have done.

| Intersting quote on the Leigh forum. Fev have entered into a DR agreement with Wakefield:-
Quote ="Thrombo69"The mystery investor is said to be Cath Hetherington from Wakefield who is putting in the money to get the stands finished. This is also the reason for the DR deal. The reason behind it all is that Wakefields lease at Belle Vue ends at the end of the season and it's looking likely that they will be evicted by the RBS who own the ground. This obviously leaves them with nowhere to play, hence the link up with Featherstone.
The cloak and dagger secrecy is said to be because of a possible 'conflict of interests' going forward into next year if both sides are in the middle 8 and CH is involved in both.
The lad who has furnished me with this info is a decent fella and been correct on many issues regarding Fev etc.'"

| That raises a good point about the middle eight next season. If DR continues, then we could indeed potentially have "paired" teams playing in the same league!
