Quite ironic that I've just been out in the car, Overtook a cyclist then got to a junction and stopped for a red light. Needless to say the cyclist caught up and went straight through the red light having a quick glance to his left and deciding that nothing was coming.

I don't think I've seen it mentioned on this thread yet but a programme on the BBC a few months ago was really interesting. Basically they followed cyclists and motorists in London showing the idiotic stuff both sets of people got upto.

I remember it mainly for a young lad who rode his Bike with a camera on his helmet who came across as one of the most arrogrant people I've ever seen. Who basically thought that because he had the camera he could do what he liked and if anyone gave him any jip then the little camera on his helmet made him invincible...

I know, and its nearly always males too - its an aggression thing.

Having cycled in heavy commuter traffic I know that there is conflict from time to time, not the sort of gesticulating stand-up fight sort of conflict but a definite flavour of "Fook me that was too close" or "I don't think that person waiting to pull out of that junction has actually seen me yet", and there is definitely a heightened sense of speed as cars zip past you (even within the speed limits) and of personal risk - not only have you got the motorised road users to contend with but you've also got the road surface waiting to pitch you off into the road, and it can be terrible near the kerb.

All of this adds to a "them and us" attitude and in certain males it becomes aggressive and competitive, for no real need, not many cyclists actually want to physically take on a motor vehicle and not many vehicle drivers actually want to run over a cyclist, but you'd be excused for not thinking this was the case when you see some of them.

All of which could be massively avoided with the judicious separation of the two types of road users with the ultimate aim of making the routes safer for children to use - how many kids cycle to school these days ?

Theres loads of them on Youtube and without fail nearly all of them put themselves into danger by their manner of riding, and their arrogance.

There is one who takes a route into Leeds that I have used and just from the video I can tell that he is riding aggressively in heavy traffic and also too fast to avoid any problems, I take my hat off to his fitness because he is pelting along and easily keeping up with the motor traffic, but when stuff happens (as it invariably does to him) then he is very vulnerable and usually sh#ts himself and then starts bawling out the drivers - when its not always their fault.

Have you ever been to or seen one of the Sky Rides? I've done a couple now in Leeds and Bradford and there are thousands of young families out on a loop of closed roads. They walk their bikes there and walk their bikes home again though, which I think is telling. There's so much demand for segregated bike paths out there but it's completely hidden, because for many it's all or nothing.

Only noticed it in Leeds this year when it was too late to re-organise stuff, looked good though, and you're right, there's a huge family demand but bikes. kids, and A roads just don't mix well, which is a great shame.

One I saw once on youtube once was a cyclist who crashed into a car that pulled out on him. Even from the video I could tell the car was going to pull out on him from a good way away. Cyclist proceeds to crash into him, seemingly just to prove a point that he had right of way.

Last month I witnessed a small group of cyclists turning right at a junction. They all looked behind them, signaled right and slowly moved into the middle of the road just before the junction and waited for the traffic in the opposite direction to cease before making their maneuver.

Approaching them from behind was a woman in a slick Audi who wound her window down and screamed bloody murder and abuse at them, because she had been held up for all of 10-15 seconds.

Aggression works both ways.

Today I saw a cyclist stop at a red light, wait, then move off with no drama whatsoever, it then took me about 20 seconds to get past him and not once did I get angry about it, I went to work and he went wherever he was going with zero fuss.

Been threatened by other motorists a few times, usually when they try to cut in front of me in daft situations and I don't let them. I've even had one try to get out of his car to start a fight with me over that. I moved off very slowly so he could almost catch me, kept him going for a good 50 metres, then accelerated up to the speed limit. Leaving him to walk back to his car, which had been left unattended in the middle of the road. I hope he felt like a bit of a fool during that walk back.

He did feel a bit of a fool.

But he thinks you're a pu55y who ran from a fight.

Can't say I'm bothered, there are things I'd get into a fight over but overtaking isn't one of them.

I've been in a similar situation where I refused to let someone to cut in. That lead to a truck hitting me.

On the one hand I agree that it is a stupid, very *male* thing to do to get into a fight over a petty argument about driving, but on the other hand I do think if you're willing to wind someone up so much that they offer you a scrap, you are in effect "bottling" it to then claim to be above that type of thing.



I think the worst is to be like you, and not realise that they are ultimately very similar things.

Just to details what I did in the lead up.

We were on the approach to a set off lights. I was going forward in the left lane (marked for turning left or going forward), he was in the right lane (turning right or going forward). We were both going forward, travelling at about 20mph in traffic. As we got closer to the lights the two cars in front of him started indicating to turn right, and slowed down ready to stop as there was oncoming traffic.

After slowing to their speed, it evidently dawned on him that he would likely miss the lights, so he simultaneously turned his left indicator on and slightly edged into the left lane. I was already parallel with his back bumper so presumably he expected me to sharply brake and stop to let him out. I knew he had seen me by the way he hadn't fully pulled out, so I carried on and he had to pull back in and stop behind the two cars, then once a few more cars had passed in the left lane, he jumped the red light and zoomed up the road to try and start a fight with me.

Now although I'm confident I could have stopped if he had carried on pulling out, I recognise this was hardly defensive driving on my part. However, I'd hardly say this was a case of me actively winding him up or looking for a fight. I'd be amazed if he would have stopped in my situation. I'd also not expect to be able to pull straight out in his situation. I had the foresight to stay in the left lane, he didn't, he should wait.

I had a similar contre-temps with a dick4brains last year, he was driving a Porsche, was about five foot nothing, obviously into body building, and had, wait for it, a pony tail - we were both trying to squeeze from two lanes into one and I was being the y one on the inside just to see if he'd back down in the Porsche vs my old Peugeot.

He didn't so eventually I did and then he stopped and jumped out and came storming across to my car, I wound my window down and just laughed at him, which didn't go down to well, so I laughed at him again, he was pumping his arms up and down like a chimpanzee by now and it was then that I noticed that he had a t-shirt on for a car refinishers so it probably wasn't even his Porsche, which made me laugh at him again.

By this time he didn't know what to do next as he'd obviously been expecting a different reaction, so I pointed at the badge on his t-shirt and asked if that was the company he worked for so he called me a d#ckhead and then got back in his (probably clients) Porsche and drove off - but we were both going into town in busy traffic so I followed him for the next 20 minutes and every time he looked in his mirror I laughed at him again.

Worst one I had recently was driving home from work on the M6. The traffic was heavy and I was in a line of traffic in the outside lane going at approx 50 mph. The van in front of me slammed his anchors on, presumably due to do some idiot cutting someone up further up the carriageway. I responded by doing the same to avoid rear ending him and pulled up about 6 foot behind him. The brand new white BMW that had been tailgating me pulled up less than a foot from my bumper. The traffic started to move again at which point the to55er in the BMW undertook me, cut me up then slammed his brakes on for no reason. Luckily I avoided hitting him. I gave a hand signal as to what I thought of his driving and received one back. Any way shortly after I moved back into the middle lane in preparation of reaching my turn off and observed said to55er in BMW being cut up by a Porsche (Justice!). To make things even more enjoyable the outside lane came to a grinding halt and as the middle lane crawled past them I once more had the opportunity to give him (BMW) an indication as to what I thought of his driving. Instead I just smiled at his bright red fuming face!

Laughing at angry people, especially when you made them angry, is one of lifes pleasures and is guaranteed to make them even more angry because there is not insult or gesture or comeback left in their library of anger if you're just going to laugh at them even more.

I can beat that. I once flew into Belfast City Airport and as we left and joined the queue of traffic on the M2, a bloke came cycling along the hard shoulder with a set of ladders on his shoulder and a bucket hanging from his handlebars. Apparently he was a regular sight each morning
