Just in defence of our great city of Hull are fellow posters aware that we are amongst the last 4 nominations to be the UK's City of Culture for 2014?

Does that mean that Hull is among the last four cities in the country to have been nominated, ie all the others have had a go before, or is Hull in the semi-finals for City of Culture ?

The other thing of course is that its a Europe-wide competition to regenerate lost causes - thats why Liverpool won it one year and why Bradford tried to get it too (although the reply was , "Not THAT much of a lost cause, please"

I had to switch the Today programme off this morning, something I normally only do when James Naughtie is interrupting someone, or when he's pontificating about some vitally important poetry competition.

They played some clips from last night's TV where presenters were reading out some of the texts and e-mails they'd received which were saying, basically, "Christ on a bike! How much more of this do we have to suffer? When do we reach the point when enough is enough?". Then, showing a deft touch of irony, they went to a piece of fluff guessing what the country will look like in 50 years time when Prince Dumbledore accedes to the throne.

Off back to her parents apparently. Buckleberry is one of my most productive selling areas. Newborns, especially royal newborns need good quality fish. I'll be camping there next week and knocking every door in sight

I came past Buck House, two weeks ago tomorrow, and there was already pretty much a camp of media tents set up. Took me a moment or two to remember what it was in aid of.

Why not wish them well as parents of a newly born son. The baby and the father didn't have a choice in which family it was born into. Yes the media coverage was ott, but being the the baby of the son of diana, was only to be expected. Some of the nastiness shown towards the parents and the baby by the usual suspects on here is pretty pathetic and just shows them up for what they are.

Personally, I haven't wished anyone ill or well in this matter. And I'm not about to either.

However, given the current culture of "nastiness" toward swathes of the population, based on nothing more than lies from government ministers, repeated uncritically by a nasty press, surely "pathetic" behaviour is in keeping with the government-inspired mood of our times?

I don't know what nastiness you're talking about. I professed the wish for the baby to be born brown. It was a mean joke. I didn't mean it.

I haven't read anyone on here wish genuine harm on the child or mother. I don't think anyone would. Most of us are just sick of them ruining the news for the last few years and the persistent media lie that the country was as excited as the immediate family is just BS to most of us.

They're on a BBC witch hunt anyway so this event will just be even more fodder for them. Yesterdays massive headline from the Mail were along the lines of "Nicholas Witchell does piece to camera and says theres nothing happening yet." Then followed a load of diatribe about the BBC. They'll soon find something/someone else to castigate soon when they get bored of the BBC.
