| Quote ="Dally"Quote ="Rock God X"By your feeble logic, we should deny equal rights to Jews, just on the off chance that your nightmare scenario becomes reality. The fact of the matter is that this piece of legislation is right and it is just. I've yet to hear a single compelling argument against. All we seem to get from opponents is selective quoting of holy texts and apocalyptic stupidity like your Nazi idea.
And whilst there have been attempts by (mainly Tory) Governments to remove some rights from workers, there's been nothing that you'd put on a par with Nazi Germany. Over the course of the last century or so, the march has been very much in one direction.'"
Nazi Germany was just an example of how quickly things can change even in a modern society. My basic premise is that times change but human fundamentals do not. So, at some time the pendulum WILL swing. that may not be tomorrow, in 10 years, even in 50 years but it will.
The last century or so saw those "rights" introduced as the country got richer. the country looks set to get very much poorer in relative and probably real terms. With that things will change.
As another example, civil liberties are being eroded at an enormous rate. The instruments of the state and indeed private companies are getting increasingly authoritarian - no longer in our everyday lives do people in positions of authority take a balanced view but now its a case of fine people for any anything, no mitigation. Whereas, it is very difficult to get accountability the other way round.'"
Whether or not your outlandish ideas about the future come to pass is immaterial. One cannot seek to deny rights to a group of people on the basis that society might change in fifty years time and, if it does, they may conceivably become targets. You do what is right because it is right, you don't base your decisions on some breathtakingly unlikely scenario you've just dreamt up.

I didn't suggest denying them anything.

58% of Tory MP's failed to vote for equality, including that saviour of civil liberties David Davis.

I think 10 Labour ones did too? What is wrong with that? Shouldn't MPs be allowed to vote with their constituents wishes / there supporters wishes / their own conscience / their own beliefs rather than any trend of the day? What do you want a bunch of Blair / Cameron clones - who say whatever is on the public agenda that day but then carry on in their own 'sweet' way the next day? Give me a representative or a conviction politicaian anyday.

Eh? Why would you be in favour of something you 'see no point or reason to'? And why invent some silly scenario to justify withholding rights if you are in favour of granting those rights?

I find that people who don't have rights are always clamouring for them. The ones that have the rights tend to be quiet.
What is the problem with people having the same rights as you Dally?

No 22 Labour MP's voted against and 16 abstained, making it 15% of Labour MP's for whom I hold the same derision.
4 Lib Dem MP's voted against and 7 abstained, making it 20% of Lib Dem MP's
8 Independents/Minor Party MP's voted for
10 Independents/Minor Party MP's voted against including Mad Nad.
Since when has equality been a trend? You're a very strange person, Dally.

What is your view on those who voted against?
Cameron just think he's being "cool" ie pandering to what he thinks is the current "trend". Sadly for him, he's annoyed most of his party and its supporters.

I agree he's annoyed most of his party and its supporters, but it merely shows what the majority of the Tory Party are really like.

No - it's a rights issue, being opposed by a minority of bigoted homophobes; the majority of the population can't see what all the fuss is about and would happily see the legislation passed so that parliament can get on with more important things, like demonising the disabled or dismantling the education system.

What is next on Cameron's legalisation list - incest, bestiality, lowering the age of consent
and
Homosexuality
First its illegal
Now it is legal
When will be compulsory?

Quite possibly he does.
Anything that splits the Tory party is fine by me.
Quote ="Dally" Sadly for him, he's annoyed most of his party and its supporters.'"
Quite possibly so .... and add to that the approximately one in ten voters who are gay who will be checking to see which way their MP voted and taking this into account at the next election.
Craig Whittaker, for example, is the MP for Calder Valley, in whose constituency lies Hebden Bridge, often touted as the Lesbian capital of the UK.
Is this Tory MP so highly principled that he's prepared to lose an awful lot of votes? Or does he think they're all lefties whose vote he wouldn't have got anyway? Or is he just totally out of of touch with his constituency? ... or is it (more likely in my view) simply that he couldn't have faced the constituency Tory reselection comittee if he'd voted any other way?

I think they'll be more concerned with the approximately 9 in 10 that are not gay looking to see how their MP voted. UKIP will have a field day at the next election.

Oh my word are you honestly suggesting we should not treat all individual choices equally because of Adolf Hitler
If any-thing I would suggest that part of history has played a huge part in attitude changes and the promotion of equality.

I think Dally is trying to suggest that all heterosexuals that would vote Conservative are homophobic, which is clearly totally wrong.
It's a bit like when kirkstaller (where is that delightful individual by the way?) makes comment that would have you believe that you being a 'Christian" and being homosexual are incompatible.
Thankfully both Dally and kirkstaller are irrelevant constructs on an RL messageboard, worryingly, people who share their "views" exist in the real world, and can vote.
