Where's the best place to start in terms of buying a guitar? My gf wants to learn to play and it's her birthday next month so would like to get her one as a gift - but should I buy a new one ( and if so, how much to spend on a first one? ) or should I get a 2nd hand one to start with while she gets into it??'"
Depends on what style of music she wants to play.
Also be careful not to get too thick a fret board as womens hands are generally smaller than mens.

| Today are mostly been about Bayside's Sirens and Condolences album.
If anything screamed "emo" it is this album, but it's bloody good at it!

| I know they are not remotely British but I'm off to watch Guns n Roses tonight.
Used to be a huge fan, although now it's just Axl Rose and whichever musicians he's not fallen out with. I'm only going as the tickets were a present off the wife...... Have been reading tour reviews and apparently they don't come on stage till 10:30-11:00ish.

The musicians he's not fallen out with are far more talented than the ones he has fallen out with, so they will still put on a good show. Just don't expect classic GNR, they're a modern and talented band being held back by Rose's belief that it's 1996 and he's still right. I get the feeling that if he let them write and record a few albums, they'd have good enough material to be worth watching in their own right, but instead he insists on playing material written 25 years ago by people he claims to want no links to.
Going to watch them is a pain only if you want to see the support act. I've never bothered and turned up at about 10. But you will get the idiotic minority who turn up at 7 and get a mood on because their last train home is 10.40.

The gig was ok. Must admit that I have watched Slash and his band a few times over the last 2 years and enjoyed those gigs far more.

| Guns N' Roses were brilliant in Manchester last night, this is the 6th time i have seen them and i loved every minute of it...
They came on stage at 11.00 ish and we only left the arena at around 3.00am - a very long set which included some real high points - most notably Estranged and Civil War - not songs i have ever seen them perform live before.
Still don't understand why people buy tickets to watch this band and then expect them to start the show at 9.00pm - do your research please!

I must admit I didn't bother this time. It would have been my 4th Chinese Democracy tour. I just don't understand why they don't release music any more? The likes of Ashba and Thal are obviously desperate to put their own stamp on the band and play songs they've been involved in. Most of the stuff they play from Appetite is 26/27 years old, the UYI stuff is 22/23 years old and even the 'new' Chinese Democracy stuff is now 10-15 years old as it was written during the Buckethead/Finck days. He went on about not attending the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction as he wanted to showcase the new band and not dig up the old band, but then doesn't back the new band by releasing new music and still plays the old bands music.

I think sometimes its a simple as Axl just not wanting to although he did say that we would see them again soon when he left the stage and it really was worth attending just to see Estranged live - it really was awesome. Im not sure there is as much money to be made releasing albums as what they used to be and Axl has always taken time to get things right - unlike other artist that release sub standard material every other year.
On another note ive never seen Axl look so happy - he was smiling, laughing and joking all the way through the gig and the whole band were taking the out of Ashba for his constant jestures to the crowd. The other band members also performed a couple of new tunes during the set and some of the instramentals were amazing.

| I think the GnR trap is one that many bands fall into - you have a brief period of huge popularity followed by a swift decline where only the hardcore of fans stick with them.
They then stop recording, more fans drift away, and by the time it's gig time again, the only way to get people packing out big venues is to play all the stuff that people know and are familiar with - as a casual fan, you'd not bother if you thought they'd be playing stuff you didn't know.
I've seen it happen with bands I like(d) - Madness, The Specials for two - who have a huge history of material that people outside the diehards have no knowledge of, and so this stuff never gets played out. New albums are recorded and then apparently disowned.
It's a bit sad really

| Guess this could be a long shot, but has anybody else got Sigur Ros' latest offering 'Valtari' and, if so, what do they make of it?
Personally, I think its an absolute joy. They've dispensed with any attempt at the commercial, mainstream tunes that their last couple of albums had a flavour of, and instead they have produced almost a hour of soothing ambience.
Anybody looking for the crescendo sounds of 'Glossoli' or 'Poppalagio' will be disappointed, with only 'Varuo' coming close to that sort of thing, but if stark minimalism sounds are something that might interest you, then this will be perfect.
Don't be surprised to see a few of these tracks accompanying various BBC documentaries very soon....

| I appreciate we might not all be having Jubilee street parties, but a nice little Jubilee mix tape from Andi Durrant from Capital FM / Riley and Durrant
quite good fun celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee with an hour-long lesson in all things British.. All the best (and worst) music, tv and film from our little island.

Just out of interest, how do they get away with that? I reckon 95%+ of the gigs I've been to have a had a curfew of 11.00 and have only gone a few minutes past that if at all.

They don't in many cases Several councils have tried turning the lights off, others have fined the venues who in turn have fined the band. They always get criticised in the press about it and the owners/manages of several venues have expressed their distain at their appalling behaviour. They still seem to book them for the following year however, so I wonder if it's not all just PR.
