Yes it was - it triggered a reform to gun laws in this country that made them even harder to get hold of and banned private ownership of high calibre handguns and later, .22 calibre handguns; there was also an amnesty, which took about 170k handguns out of circulation.
So, that's one way to respond; another way is to arm teachers. |

This totally ignores the problems of stolen and illegally imported/purchased firearms. You can't legislate a convicted felon (already banned from owning a gun) to not purchase a weapon on the black market and then use it....how would you propose to do this?
Also, if you are so opposed to guns why is your username a famous light machine gun? Seems odd is all. |

I didn't say for a minute that it solved the problem - but it certainly tackled a big part of it; if a person can't obtain a firearm legitimately, then it's not available to be stolen, yes?
As for the illegal import and more latterly, the conversion of blank or replica pistols (what the police call 'junk firearms') - I believe that did rise after the legislation was introduced; I don't know how you tackle that - but I would argue that slashing police budgets and removing 20k frontline police officers is probably not part of a wise prevention strategy.

So you have no answer to my question about illegal imports...your situation is far different from ours being on a far distant island. Canada shares the longest undefended border in the world with the US. Firearms are very cheap in the US and easy to get across the border....how do you stop someone from walking across an undefended border point with a pistol?.....and please don't say by spending more, and more, and more....doesn't mitigate the problem. You have no idea in Europe of the geographic size of the border over here.
So your parents called you after a light machine gun...interesting....I fired a Bren before and I liked it....a beautiful weapon. |

Authorities are investigating a racist, anti-immigrant screed that they believe was posted by a man who opened fire at a shopping in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday.
Twenty people were killed and 26 people were injured when the gunman, identified by three sources as Patrick Crusius, a 21-year-old white man from Allen, Texas, began shooting just after 10:30 a.m.
About 20 minutes earlier, a post on the online message board 8chan believed to be from the suspect laid out a dark vision of America overrun by Hispanic immigrants. The 2,300-word document, which police called a "manifesto," was attached to a post that said, "I'm probably going to die today."
The writing is filled with white nationalist language and racist hatred toward immigrants and Latinos. It blames immigrants and first-generation Americans for taking away jobs.
Although authorities are still investigating the suspect's connection to the document, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting a "hate crime" during an evening news briefing, and the FBI has also opened a domestic terrorism investigation into the massacre, a source familiar with the investigation process said Saturday.
“This is disgusting, intolerable. It's not Texan," Abbott told reporters who asked about the document. "We are going to aggressively prosecute it both as capital murder, but also as a hate crime, which is what it appears to be, without having seen all the evidence yet."
FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Emmerson Buie said more investigative work was needed to determine whether there was a possible hate crime.
The suspect is in custody and authorities are looking at the possibility of bringing capital murder charges against him.
The mass shooting happened in one of the largest and safest cities on the US-Mexico border, a place central to the Trump administration's hardline stance on immigration and a city that Rep. Cesar Blanco called "ground zero" of the administration's family separations policy.
El Paso County had an estimated population of 840,000 people as of July 2018, according to the US Census Bureau. An estimated 83% were Hispanic or Latino.

A screed which parroted the language used by the racist in chief, when referring to immigration; "invasion," "infestation," and suchlike - which researchers have found he has done around 1000 times when pouring his warm diarrhoea all over social media.
Anyhow - he was white, so it's metal illness and video games to blame; forgetting the fact that of course that most countries in the world have both mental illness and video games, but are miles behind the US when it comes to mass shootings. I wonder what the difference could be? |
