| Just looking for a piece of software for work that allows you to convert numerous word/excel files etc to one PDF.
Ideally looking at around £20 a licence.
If anyone can point me in the right direction that'd be great.
TIA.

We're on that at the moment, well majority are on the free version and having one or two problems with it lately.

sounds like you're using it in a commercial setting, I'd buy Acrobat/Distiller if it was business critical.

We're too tight to fork out for that! The ability to convert multiple MS Office docs into one PDF is probably the main feature we need. Cute doesn't have it, does it?

No idea.
It really does annoy me when business expect to get fully featured software for nothing, think about the cost of NOT being able to convert multiple documents into PDF files and then think about the £200 acrobat/distiller would cost, then think about how many documents you'll send in that format over a year, then wotk out the unit cost per document.
Think about not being able to convert completed accounts to PDF and post them on the Companies House website via webfiling.

No, it doesn't.
It annoys me too. We'll pay excessive amounts for things we dont need but stuff like this, we'll try get it as cheap as possible! £89 for Acrobat standard aint too steep. We actually dont send too many PDFs out, but it has risen about 200% recently. I'll stop there before i go off on a whole different tangent and whinge about other things we need and dont get
Companies House is a whole different story. Our LTD compmany accounts are all based on IRIS Accounting Software, which can output a report to PDF format and would be then forwarded to Co. House.

Without labouring the point, because you said you agree, personally I'd worry if my accountant couldn't see the business case for spending £89 on business critical software, I'd also be concerned that they couldn't express it in their own accounts as a legitimate expense.
Have a look what the paid for version of CutePDF can do, that might be a feature?

I do worry sometimes. They're idiots who spend £200 on headed note pads for clients but they sit in a box and no one uses them - well except me! I often find myself shaking my head at somethings.
I'll have a gander at the paid version and see what said director thinks of it.
Acrobat X Standard is £132 actually, I converted it on $139 but UK price is more?

You could try PDFill - www.pdfill.com/pdf_tools_free.html
It has a bunch of free tools although I haven't tried all of them. I use the free PDF writer from them as well and it works well.

How do I stop it from automatically blocking all images from my incoming emails?
It's getting quite annoying now, cheers.

| After my recent scare re: hard drive, I want to back up my laptop. Can someone reccomend a decent external hard drive? Or just a general decent source for buying one? Ideally, I'd like to order tonight for delivery on Saturday.

| Any Excel wizzes aout there? Basic, but infuriating, I have conditional formatting to change a cell coulour if a date is past. Unfortunately, if no date is entered the cell automatically infills itself.

what do you mean "in fills", if the cell is balnk then, technically, it won't meet any criteria, try putting a condition that states if the cell is blank then the formatting is "normal"

I can tell you how I've done it when I wanted to use conditional formatting to highlight dates that fell before a specific date - may or may not be useful to you.
I had a load of dates in a column and wanted to highlight those dates prior to 20/12/2010. If you use a 'less than' rule it will also highlight those cells which do not have dates in them. I got around this by using a 'between' rule (i.e. between 1 and 40532). In this case the cell has to have a value in it to be highlighted (>1) and less than 40532 (the value for 20/12/2010).
You should be able to use one or more of the built-in date functions to set the limits for the conditional formatting values.

Cheers.
This is exactly what I did. I never thought that having no criteria would impact on the formatting.

| I can't seem to use the search facility on my desktop pc. Right clicking on start and then search, nothing happens!! So tried clicking start, search, for files and folders - and again, nothing happens.....
How do I get it to work?? I'm running Windows XP, so it's quite an old version of Windows, but surely that shouldn't stop this from working!!
