| Off to Ramsbottom Festival on Sunday to see the Waterboys. Got intrigued as to other acts and saw Otis Gibbs, and decided I may be more excited about seeing him than the main act.

| Summary of yesterday's Ramsbottom Music Festival
The Waterboys - Seriously, obscenely awesome! No other words.
Capercaille - Lovely Gallic Folk/Prog combo.
Ahab - Check these guys out, banned from busking in London because they draw a crowd. Their harmonies are superb and their cover of OCMS's Wagon Wheel caused me to reach sexual climax.
Michael McGoldrick & Friends - Excellent instrumental Scottish Folk
Otis Gibbs - Fans of Steve Earle, Townes van Zandt and the like should check this guy out. And a top bloke to boot.
The Once - Superb Celtic inspired Candian trio.
Kirsty Almeida & The Troubadours - Amy Winehouse if she applied herself and laid of the crack pipe.

| What about people's favourite albums that, when released, got a critical slating or was slightly underwhelming, but now, some time on, turns out to be an absolute belter??
I'll start with REM's 'Monster' from 1994, which got average reviews on release, mainly because it was following the commercially huge 'Automatic For The People'......'Monster' was the sound of REM sticking two fingers up at the mainstream media, who wanted another cocktail party-friendly release and instead got Peter Buck being a teenager again with his guitar and Michael Stipe going more extreme with his famously unfathomable lyrics.
On listening now, its probably one of REM's greatest moments and deserves a lot better of a reputation than it seems to have.

Monster was supposedly Peter Buck's record as he wanted to rock out in comparison to Automatic For The People and before that Out Of Time. I have to say I do like 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi' or 'Up' as unacclaimed later REM albums. Truth be told though Murmur is their stand out for me all these years later.

| I'd never heard of Alice Russell till last night. It seems she's been around for a few years, a couple of example on the tube are "Hurry on now" and her very different version of Gnarls Berkeley's "Crazy" ![Thumbs up icon_thumb.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_thumb.gif)

Sad news, but they have probably reached their natural end.....They leave a back catalogue to rival any band of the rock and roll era though.
Seems a bit spooky I wrote that post yesterday though.... ![Shocked icon_eek.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_eek.gif)

For the best really, were never close to getting close to what they were in the 1990-2000's
Be remembered for some fantastic songs!

That's true. Iwent to see them on either the 'Boy' or 'October' tour (at my age they all blur into one!) and I used to really like them but I think we can agree they have outstayed their welcome.

| Gutted to hear of REM splitting up, but as others said it is probably the right time. Although I really enjoyed "Accelerate", "Collapse Into Now" wasn't their best and I don't think that it was every likely to be toured anyway.

Yep couldn't agree more.
When Achtung Baby came out in 1991 I was very disappointed with it.
All the albums since have been poor as well.

| Just picked up UB40s debut 'Signing Off' on CD for about £3.
Forgotten how good this album was compared to the dross they produced in later years.
Hope to have Addictive Philosophy's new album in the post tomorrow. If you don't know them, they're a good little punk band from Derby who've been doing the rounds for about 10 years now

Brilliant album. I still listen to it. Forget the bland covers band they became, this and 'One in Ten' were authentic UK reggae.

'Food For Thought' was fantastic.....To a white 10 year old boy in Warrington, it was pretty radical stuff.
It still baffles me to this day how they turned into the bland band they became....At their early 80's breakthrough, they were pretty cutting edge, during a pretty volatile period for British society.
