| Quick question on Excel - i've opened it at work this morning and for some reason, my columns are labelled with numbers rather than letters. And when i click in the first cell, what normally would be A1, it's telling me that it's R1C1 - how do I fix it and get it back to normal???

| Just bought another laptop from Tesco. It's an ex-display Toshiba, i3 processor and so on so it's quite new. £40.00 it was.
Anyway, it has three keys missing, now I've heard Toshiba's can be quite problematic when it comes to keys. The only key that really matters is the letter A, the other two are minor keys that a casual user won't be using. Anybody know where I can get a keyboard repair done? Or, even better, how easy would it be for me to order the keys and set them up myself?
Cheers.

If it's just the physical key that is missing then ebay is probably your best bet. Laptop keys are usually just click on click off, so installing a new key shouldn't be any problem at all, just worth checking that the housing where the key sits in the laptop hasn't been snapped.

| Plenty of places on the internet selling individual keys. Laptopkeys.co.uk an example, it's around £1.50 a key.

I'll check later. One of the lads I work with said if it's snapped, you'd have to replace the full keyboard?

You're using (for some reason) R1C1 option style. If you're using the latest excel version, go to file>options>formulas and uncheck the R1C1 reference style. I'm sure its there under options on other versions as well, go to tools>options. Can't check that at the minute I've only got the newer version at home.

Yup. But on most laptops even that isn't a major problem. I changed the keyboard on one of our laptops recently. All I had to do was fold the screen back, unclip the top bit of house above the keyboard, remove four screws and disconnect a cable. Done in five minutes.

| I finally did it. I got myself a MacBook. It's at home as I type and I'd like to know any key 'apps'/programmes any Mac users recommend. I've had a little play on it and it's just most beautiful thing ever!
Also, what is the best AV and Firewall for Mac?
Cheers

| Has anyone got a tablet on Android?
Is it a good idea? T'other half wants to get a tablet type thing, it'll only really be used for a bit of surfing when the other ones on the main lap top so I was thinking Android as it'll be cheaper than an ipad.

AV I'm not sure I'd bother with, as long as you're not downloading random gibberish and running it. There's always the potential for other vectors of attack, but I'm not sure AV can really protect you properly from that as long as you keep your software up to date.
Best consumer firewall I've seen is [iLittle Snitch[/i:

Haha well I was just thinking of general apps to enhance the experience. I'm new to the Mac so anything users would say was a good thing to have.
So far, using it has been an absolute joy though.

Order the full keyboard mate, contact Toshiba direct or an authorised Toshiba repair centre, the board itself will be pretty cheap and add half an hours labour.

That's the laptop I got for £40 by the way. I think any laptop at £40 is a decent deal. Providing I can get the keys sorted, it should turn out alright. I'm probably gonna sell it to my girlfriend's sister anyway (not at a profit), but it's still nice for the ego to get good bargains (hope it's a bargain!).

| I hadn't heard of little snitch before (probably because it's for Mac) but a quick look on there website reveals
"A firewall protects your computer against unwanted guests from the Internet. But who protects your private data from being sent out? Little Snitch does!"
Where they appear to differentiate between a Firewall and what Little Snitch does. From first glance it's sounds more like it for fills a similar purpose to SELinux.
Oh except it only seems to be interested in outgoing traffic, making it almost pointless as a consumer firewall, as the point is to block unwanted incoming connections (for most people; especially home users).
I would have thought though, that the guy that asked, is on a home LAN, presumably behind a Firewall which is built into his router anyway (it's probably not been configured) but better that over a software firewall IMO.

It is more of a network monitor, it allows you to control what leaves your computer, it is heavily used by those who may not have paid for their software. To install it thinking you are protected from intrusion (as a real firewall would) or rogue programs calling home is naive at best.

This makes no sense; a "real" firewall with bad settings won't protect you from intrusion, either. But that's apparently a "real" firewall, whereas [iLittle Snitch[/i is not?
A firewall selectively blocks network communications. Which is what [iLittle Snitch[/i does.

FFS, if you'd used Little Snitch for any length of time you'd know it is not to be used in place of a real firewall, even the vendors are up front about its uses and make it plain it is not a firewall.
The only reason it stands up as a network monitor is MacOS is not a target for mainstream attack, if it were it would fall apart faster that a brides nightie.
