You've also got to factor in what people are actually recording. Gigs these days are far more of a visual spectacle than they used to be, particularly with regards to festivals and electronic music. Take a look at the visuals for Daft Punk's Alive 2007 tour for example; you can see why people would want to watch it more than once. That tour really raised the bar for all live acts.

Back in the eraly 90s when I was managing a Merc dealership, I used to host a Christmas lunch for my best customers at the Potters' Club, Stoke. During one such event, one of my customers was annoying the hell out of everyone by continuing to answer one or other of his two mobile phones (this at a time when "free" phones were unheard of and usually cost £800+ and he "needed" two because of the patchy coverage of Vodaphone & Cellnet). I asked him a couple of times to switch them off and was ignored, so told him that the next time it rang, I'd dump it in the wine cooler.

It rang again and was promptly drowned. He hurriedly switched off the other and proceeded to finish his lunch in a sulk. I also sent him a replacement phone the following day.
