So, does the panel think that cop killer Harry Roberts, still in chokey since 1966, has had a better or worse punishment than being snuffed out? He was sentenced to life a fe w months after the suspension of the death penalty. His "minimum term" of 30 years was actually up in 1996, but repeated attempts at parole since then have fallen on stony ground.

In jail since Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup, think about that. Hard to say without being actually in his predicament; and presumably he always has had the option of topping himself as his own alternative; but I think being a prisoner for 46 years and counting is, from my perspective, a fate much worse than death.

The death penalty proves nothing. It does not act as a deterrent as can clearly be seen by the murder rates in the good ol US of A.
Indeed in Victorian Britain when we did hang for trivial offenses it hardly acted as a deterrent. For example we used to hang for pick pocketing. Crowds would gather to see the condemned be hung. Whilst the crowds watched on as the pick pockets were hung, the new generation of pick pockets would be hard at work in the crowd. Futile business and as has been said a state that resorts to murder in this way is not civilised.
What happened yesterday was awful and amounted to simple slaughter of two innocent women regardless of the profession they chose. We must never resort to capital punishment again. I solves and prevents nothing.

We can't have the death penalty here ( thank goodness ) because we are in the EU and all countries ( unless I am wrong ) in the EU don't have it.

Not quite. The final death penalty offences were only changed to imprisonment in about 1998, I think, and we've been in the EU/EEC etc for much longer

This 21st century nonsense is just that. If you take that argument then why do we have such scum committing atrocities in the 21st century? By your logic we should not, but we clearly do! So the logic is lop-sided and therefore illogical. The death penalty should be introduced for certain categories of crime that the public / their representatives warrant it.

Do what I saw in a few films a few years back. Shove all the 'soon to die criminals' on an island or in a 'death race', let them wipe each other out, film it and broadcast it. Sell the rights to a TV company.

This way you get rid of the scum and potentially make millions in revenue for the Govt in a time when its needed.

I love that phrase 'right-thinking'. When it's used in this context I always assume it means 'the thinking of those on the right' as opposed to 'those who think sensibly'. The evidence bears that train of thought out again.

Because America is unique amongst that collection in being a country where all of its police forces carry firearms on regular duty and where several states still have the death penalty for murder and definitely for the murder of a police officer.

By coincidence its also a country with a very similar social, religious and moral status to ours (as opposed to, say, Iran which also has the death penealty and armed police but socially is nothing like the UK), and so it makes for a perfect comparison and indicator of what can, or in this case doesn't, happen when you enforce the kneejerk policies of arming police and executing murderers.


I have to say that the example earlier in this thread of pickpockets operating at hangings for pickpocket theives was an excellent one.
