| Quote ="Ferocious Aardvark"Indeed. had AWT been a little old lady, or a kid pilfering, the chances are high that the police would not have turned out. He may well have received worse treatment just because of who he is. '"
This depends entirely upon the area the crime is committed. Where the store I work in is located, we get a lot of "petty" theft. Some of it cheap as chips alcohol, and on one occassion, I've caught someone "doing a runner" with a cheapest branded sausage roll.
What happens then is very much down to the Guard and the detaining managers discretion. Quite often in our area, it's known petty theives who the police detain for £5ers worth, lock up for a night and let go. I've seen occassions where people have been caught by the guard, apologised and been let go.
From what I have seen of the AWT case, he had been at it a while, and they finally had the evidence to support the arrest.

The words "hunger" or "poverty" do not even appear in that report. Epic fail.

| Frankly, I am appalled at AWT's actions.
Fancy getting his cheese pre-packed from a supermarket, I'd have thought Neal's Yard Dairy or some fancy-dan "specialist" in Notting Hill was more his bag.
Standards are slipping.
I can't help disliking AWT for some inexplicable reason, maybe it's his voice, ... although, in his defence, in the 1990's he used to have a restaurant in St Christopher's Place (just off Oxford St), called "Zoe"I think, and, just inside the door was a small, framed photograph of Michael Winner, with the neat caption "This person is not welcome in this restaurant".
That alone was worth a couple of brownie points IMHO.
The food was really good.

I disliked him from the point at which he effectively took over BBC2's [iFood and Drink[/i programme, which – even in my pre-foodie days – I'd found informative and interesting.

| Antony Worrall Thompson stole some cheddar? How dairy!
I went to see Ready Steady Cook the other day. It was fantastic. Antony Worrall Thompson absolutely stole the show.
Why did the chicken cross the road? Because it was stuffed up Worrall Thompson's jacket.
Antony Worrall Thompson has been caught shoplifting milk, yeast and flour from his local Tesco. He's clearly run out of dough.
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Unless you're using the Worrall Thompson recipe book.
Antony Worrall Thompson stole some cheese and wine. And that was only for starters.
Wozza was caught stealing cheese from Tesco. He should have done it more Caerphilly.
I don't care what he's done, I'm still hanging on to my Antony Worrall Thompson blender. Better the Breville you know.

IMHO the damage had already been done by being presented by Chris Kelly (who would never swallow the food) and the god-awful Michael Barry.

I was (predictably) slow to catch some of the jokes doing the rounds – but this one's brilliant.

Now perhaps because it was my pre-foodie days (by a couple of decades), but I liked Michael Barry.

| The problem I'm wrestling with here is that there seems, from my reading of this, to be some evidence perhaps not much, of AWT having mental health issues. While that doesn't defend a crime, people are being very quick to jump on him as a criminal and not someone who perhaps needs help.
If that's the case, then maybe we and the press should be leaving him alone to deal with these issues. The Sun haven't gone down the "Bonkers Bruno" line with this, but when "Ready Steady Crook" is the headline you know it's being played for laughs.
I have laughed at the jokes, but at the back of my mind are thoughts of others with mental illness for whom jokes are seen as inappropriate (Terry Newton, Gary Speed etc).
Not trying to be holier than thou, but I wonder if we should be condemning him (or any other person in a similar situation).

| The older ones amongst us remember the fragrant Lady Isobel Barnet (*) who, having left a shop with a tin of tuna without paying for it, was so mortified by the damage that she perceived had been made to her standing in society that she committed suicide shortly after being prosecuted.
(*) Said lady was a witty and popular member of the panel on various TV shows back in the days of 405 and 625 lines (**) and monochrome TV.
Smoked like a chimney but with such style.
(**) Look it up.

| I can't believe you are all treating this serious matter with levity. Next someone will be pointing out that Antony Worrall Thompson's name is an anagram of
'Ham roll? No, not now. Pastry!'
