I don't recall it being derided, on what basis? It's a great tune, sung well, so i presume it can only be the preposterous story of the song? It's not meant to be true, but I reckon deriders would find far more suitable targets in the original version of the story  |

It's an odd one though as although it's Christmas related it only sneaked into the chart just before Christmas in 1983 and went on to reach number one in January 1984. |
