I might be slightly older even than you (is that even possible?).
We got fried food [uonce a year[/u ... chips ... and only on Speech Day, when most kids who could, went home to put on their "best" blazer for the afternoon.
Other kids, like me, who lived too far away for that or whose "best" blazer was also their only blazer stayed to lunch that day as normal ... and had the annual treat of chips.
We didn't have the canteen style dining that they seem to have now ... our choice was simple ... eat it or go hungry.
We ate it.

I never recall having chips on offer until the very beginning of the 1980s in my final year at school. I do remember mash though. Lots of it. Frequently. Divvied out so that you got a spherical dollop on your plate. Spam fritters – possibly.

Mash ... oh yes, what seemed like every day, we had mash.
Grey and lumpy but mash nonetheless.
In the winter, pudding always seemed to be some form of steamed pudding ... jam sponge, treacle sponge, chocolate sponge, vanilla sponge etc always with custard.

| Same era as Minty, I can only remember chips on a Friday once a month and always with fish.
They introduced a cafeteria system in the last year, nowt much changed apart from fish and chips available every Friday.

| I don't remember chips.
I do remember "mash", which looked (and tasted) like t had been processed by a tramp with 6 teeth.
The only decent meal was roasters. That would usually be accompanied by apple crumble and custard. People used to do their best to eat at two sittings. (Obviously everyone had spare dinner tickets, as half the time it wasn't worth bothering). But if rumbled, you'd earn an almighty crack on the head and then off to the Deputy head's office for some abuse with a size 12 running shoe.
Aye, them were't days.

Plenty of deep fried spam fritters in my Junior School days, circa '75. Not so much custard with puddings but a substance we affectionately nicknamed 'jungle juice'. Some p!ssy orangey flavoured liquid adornment to the rock hard sponges they used to serve up.

I don't recall any sponge puddings – but there seemed to be an endless variety of sago and semolina and rice pudding: always with a dollop of red jam in the middle that, for some unexplained reason, you were not supposed to twirl around into the rest of the pud.

I thought you were having a laugh until I googled it.
My jaw hit the desk.
I want to know how these people manage to switch off their logic circuits when they "think".
a) They say that the Loch Ness monster is a plesiosaur despite there being no proof that any monster exists at all, never mind a plesiosaur.
b) They say that the existence of such a plesiosaur disproves evolution theory ... quite how they conclude that an animal having not evolved disproves evolution is beyond me ... their assertion merely leads one to suspect that they either can't (or won't) reason logically or that they haven't actually understood what is meant by the term "evolution".

I'm not saying that I would have my children take the ICCE qualification, but what exactly is your problem if the course is suitably rigorous?
It's not 'brainwashing' small children. It's essentially an A level in Christian theology. You might disagree with some other things the administrators think, but that's not really relevant, is it?

Its been spotted on sonar and its been followed by a small submarine.
Apparently, according to that previous link.
Its also true that far too many Americans learn their history through watching Hollywood films without the important question "Is this fiction or not" being asked.

What do you mean "It's not 'brainwashing' small children"?
To have got that far, they must have started by brainwashing small children. There isn't a rational human being on earth that could seriously consider those questions to be bona fide unless they had been previously brainwashed.
So, if I advocated that all black or gay people were evil, would you be happy with me receiving tacit approval for an examination, aimed at furthering my prejudices, simply because I made the course suitably rigorous, that the opnly conclusions to be drawn was that I was correct?
And if you consider the questions posed, to be an indication of a "suitably rigorous course", then you really are away with the fairies.

I became a Christian a few years ago, in my early 30s. I wasn't brainwashed.

The new Godwin's Law appears to be the invoking of blacks and racism in every single debate.
The course is set from a Christian perspective. In order to attain the qualification, students must study a wide range of Christian theology, competing doctrines and Christian history. Why can't you see the academic merit in that?
Quote And if you consider the questions posed, to be an indication of a "suitably rigorous course", then you really are away with the fairies.'"
I'm no expert on what is considered suitable for Key Stage 5. That is NARIC's job.

What's the point in studying any theology?
The only benefits I can see is 'arming' people in for debates and 'spreading the word'.
Are they making the A level equivalent easy so entice lazy students in?

Factually incorrect.
It is set from the perspective of a particular, fundamentalist strand of Christian belief. The vast majority of Christians – and I'm talking the practising variety – in the UK and the West in general, do not believe such utter and complete idiocy.
Just as Darwin's original findings did not cause mass upset, because they could be fitted into what was known as 'old world' theology.
It's only in recent years that the import of US-style fundamentalist wittery has seen such cretinism gaining traction in the UK.
I know you have difficulty with facts and logic and reasoning, but just try, for once, to get it into your skull that there are many, many different strands of Christian belief and theological interpretation – just as there with any and every other religion.
You might be such a fundamentalist reactionary extremist that you're ready to condemn anyone who doesn't agree with you as "an apostate", but that does not change reality and facts.
