But actually not much good as a phone...
The latest HTC and Apple handsets are pretty close spec wise apart from actual phone functions, it is down to if you want Apple to dictate what you can and can't install and run.

There is no official desktop sync client for Android devices, but [url=http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dtDoubletwist[/url should do a good job. You can download Doubletwist and give it a try today.
Google are launching a Google Music service this autumn, but that may just be in the US to begin with, the Music industry moves at a slow pace and contracts and rights are difficult to negotiate.
If you buy an Android device, make sure it either runs 2.2 (Froyo) or will be capable of running it in the future.

| With regards to video calling, it is currently For proprietary IP options (like Skype) involves sign up, setup and buddy lists.
Now Apple's solution will only work over WiFi to begin with, which despite the obvious disadvantage it does have the advantage of being free (or at least no additional expense on what you are already paying). The approach far better quality and involves no configuration — you make a call, press one button and your call is switched to a video call over IP. This tech will be an open standard which Cisco and others have already expressed interest in adopting.
Now I have no idea if the Facetime protocol will take off, but to say Apple are “pushing” video calls like they are pushing exactly the same technology which has already failed in the marketplace shows a bit of ignorance of what is actually going on.

Facetime is video calling though? It only works over Wifi at the moment but surely they are looking to roll it out over the networks? When I had video calls in my old contract the calls were very rare and I didn't have to set anything up. Just chose video call instead of phone call. I also believe that facetime only works Iphone 4 to Iphone 4?
I'd say they are pushing it as a visit to the iphone 4 website has it as the first thing listed. Don't get me wrong, I have a Mac and I admire the beauty of Apple products but the Iphone 4 isn't the product the original Iphone was. The original Iphone had a wow factor, it seemed a leap for mobiles. The new Iphone just doesn't seem anything special to me. Pretty yes, worth me doubling my contract and forking out a few hundred quid? No way.

Having software certified also means that you don't get as many problems with badly written code. Or paying for something that doesn't work.
One concern I have over the Android OS is the sustainability of a free marketplace - there is little to keep developers developing updates etc for their apps when there is no payments for doing it.

The vast majority of stuff is peer-reviewed and bugs get quashed quickly. But the Apple control of apps isn't just about buggy software now is it?

The Android marketplace and iTunes app market are very similar, lots of free stuff but plenty of great quality and value paid for apps.

Depends if you are just browsing or looking for an app to do a certain job, there is plenty of cr@p on both platforms, plenty of good stuff too though.

| Hi phone freaks, my deal is up and I need a move. Do NOT want a touch-screen again, fed up of looking like I'm poking a kitten in the eye while I type. Keyboard is the future. Obviously a decent screen, need unlimited texts (I text my RL team 3 times a week!), and the usual stuff (camera, video, web, etc).
Really looking for something fast - my LG is good but navigating around is slow and frustrating. A fast, easy-to-use system is a must.
Any suggestions?

The deal I have is on Virgin, which judging by their website, is no longer available @ £18pm
Should still be able to get a package you need for £25pm or less, and possibly with just 18 month contract.

| What do people think of Swype? I thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but I've started using it on my phone and think it's brilliant. I manage to type things so much quicker and it recognises what you want to type even if you've not 'swyped' with any particular accuracy. I love how it remembers common words that you type that aren't in the spell checker as well.
I wonder if this will ever become a common thing with other phones...?

I have updates for my apps almost every day, the ones I have certainly seem to be developing all the time.

| Has anyone got a dell streak? Im seriously considering this over the IPhone 4. The only thing is the size at 5" and whether its pocketable enough plus will I look like Dom Joly everytime I make/take a call? Having played about with one in the O2 store these look every bit as capable if not more so than the IP4 which just doesnt look to be that much of a jump forward from the 3g 3GS on IOS4
If I stay on O2 is the SIM card interchangeable between phones i.e will O2 know whether the card being used in the streak or the Iphone and/or will they care?

The 2 best apps i have paid for are locale and golf card
Locale, turns things on and off (wifi/gps/bluetooth etc) depending on location details you enter. This saves your battery being eaten.
Golfcard well im sure you can guess.
I have the following installed.
c:geo - Geocaching utility
Audiomanager
Dolphin browser
Smooth calendar
Golfcard
Android agenda Widget
Mahjong
Countdown widget
Google maps
Dialer one
Apps organizer
LED Desire light
Battery left widget
Unit converter
Astrid Task
Dropbox
3G watchdog
Quick settings
Zedge
Beautiful widgets
Home switcher
Astro file manager
Air control
Mixzing media player
Barcode scanner
SD card storage widget
Internal phone storage widget
iMobsters
Locale
Only 3 of them are paid apps, the rest are free and very useful.

| Super stoked about the Motorola Droid X.
Just have to wait for it to come to the UK and hopefully by then it'll have 2.2 Froyo on it and I can enjoy as much flash based content as I want.
Now just got to persuade work to but my one, or at least go half in with me.

Depends on what kind you are after, the case/chargers in one add a lot of bulk such as the mophie jucie pack or case mate fuel, I actually had a cheaper one from internet about £9.99 that plugged in the bottom only however this only charged it to about 70% from 10% then it ran out. Stay clear of Griffin products that also double up as a car charger they are cr@p.
I used mine quite a lot and easily killed the battery with everything running twice a day.
Check out reviews of things like Richard solo 1200 and 1800 these are on youtube also expensive but it depending on what kinda battery back up your after; obviously working in an office is different to being out and about.
iLounge also gave a great review to a 'just gum pro' mobile charger so check that out too. I have that and use it for my Blackberry.
Up to you but there are a few suggestions, the larger then mAh then the more power the battery back up holds. The just gum pro is a massive 4400mAh I think.
They will not harm your iPhone and do a very good job, the decision is which one to choose.
Tony.

| I'm not a fan of mobile phones in any way. I have one so the wife can get hold of me (occasionally), but other than to those ends it sees little use. What I can't abide is the modern notion that you should be "connected" every minute of the day. I see friends with phones practically stuck to their hands and they 're forever sending and receiving. Thumbs of Fire! Perhaps you could call it addiction. I don't know.
I get enormously grumpy when I'm sat amongst friends watching them privately engaging with persons unknown every ten minutes. There are no thoughts of deferring responses. They MUST BE ISSUED STRAIGHT AWAY. Meanwhile I'm feeling like the uninvited guest. It's bloody RUDE!
I also object to the accusation that I am a) out of touch, b) ignorant c) awkward or d) all of such if I don't respond IMMEDIATELY to texts. Half the time I don't know where my phone is and I can often go days with it mislaid. Which means my replies are not always speedy. When I explain this to friends they can't contain their incredulity and pitying gazes. How could ANYONE not value their mobile more than their wallet, or wedding ring etc.
In any case - I don't WANT to be permanently contactable. I value my privacy and I'll be damned before I'm browbeaten into exchanging it for the "utopia" of perpetual connectivity.
