| Anyone see the video clip of that cargo plane crashing, think it was an afganistan one where a tank inside became loose and shifted to the back of the plane causing it to stall and crash in flames, horrifying

We were due to land at East Midlands on Saturday but thunderstorms were all around. Pilots tried but then circled for half an hour before diverting to Birmingham. It was so bumpy even above it all that I'm glad he didn't try to land. The tone of his voice suggested he didn't want to and we were all pretty relieved when we moved away. Worst conditions I've been in and we weren't actually inside the storm itself.
I hope this plane didn't try to land in similar conditions.

| Quote ="Him"Whilst there have been a few recently, I'm regularly amazed at how few crashes there are when you consider how many flights there are every day.'"
Same, I saw a program a year or two back think it was like "aircrash investigations" or something like that and they had an american aero-expert who compared the number of people who die on the roads in car crashes in just the US to a 747 jumbo crashing (think it was this paragraph, "In the US, each year there are about 40,000 deaths per year in automobile accidents vs. about 200 in air transport. To put this in perspective, the chance of dying in an automobile accident is about 1000 times more than winning a typical state lottery in a year." )
So for the number of flights that are around and I think its something like a flight every 2 mins comes in our goes out at Manchester alone, just one coming down is case for huge investigations shows how safe flying is, but on the flip side when one does crash its very unlikely anyone survives and it is also the best basis for terror or to attack if you want to get your message across, and the world to take note of your group/sect/cult/ bunch of knobs.
I have been on a fight that's had to make and emergency landing, was suppose to be flying to KOS last year, but the first plane we where due on had engine trouble then the second had nav trouble we did then take off but had to circle back and land at Manchester due to an electrical issue, we did get there the next day on the original plane that had engine issues from the day before.

| Meanwhile Air Algerie - Algeria's national airline - says it has lost contact with AH5017 flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers.
It's an MD83 with 112 passengers on.

I use that every time my kids fly anywhere, sad but true, in fact I'll be following it on Saturday as the youngest is off to Majorca for a few days, I've even been known to send one of them a text message when they were in the airport waiting to board to tell them to go to the gate because they were boarding now, got one back saying "How the hell do you know?".
Amazing things these live departure boards on t'interweb.
I may have mentioned this before but a few years ago when flightradar24.com had just been released, Egypt Air were clients of ours and I was on the phone one day speaking to one of their people at Heathrow and waiting for some software to upload to them, on another PC I had flightradar24 open because my eldest was flying back from somewhere and as we idly chatted away I mentioned I was watching the other screen and that in the time it had taken to download, her flight had just crossed the English Channel - he didn't believe that such a program existed for public use until I checked the busy flight paths above Heathrow and told him the flight number of one of his own company aircraft that was on final descent and then a few minutes later that it had just landed, he was amazed and dashed off to show his boss

| HAve you tried the thingy where you can switch to cockpit view from the plane? Not the actual view, of course, but a FS version, but amazing noetheless. Until due to delays in positional and course changes, and the processing power of your CPU, the view starts madly swinging from side to side and you become certain the plane's goin down

Great site ain't it. Flight tracking is a surprisingly popular pastime. I know a few people who follow flights online and listen in to airport/aircraft comms.
Interesting and understandable that everyone is avoiding eastern Ukraine like the plague. Most Europe - Far East/Australasia routings have been rerouted to the south.

| Very impressed with that tracking site. The queues in the gulf/Syria/Iran region earlier today were ridiculous, they must have been stacking them 20 high.
I take it those trackers are all theoretical? And therefore cannot be used to locate missing planes? Another one today where it's been missing for hours on end without anyone finding it. Surely in this day and age it's possible to have some kind of location system?

| This tracking site is real time with many dedicated followers installing receivers of ads-b m-lat needs at least 4 recievers to track a non ads-b equipped aircraft ( mainly older aircraft) then there's FAA which is in North America not real time but delayed by 5 minutes. The problem with this mornings aircrash was that there's no recievers in the area to supply coverage and as its a md83 these don't have ads-b transponders so would need to be in the category of m-lat.

The only problem with the tracker is that when the flight arrives at its destination you see it losing altitude and lining up for, say, Majorca, and then at 500 feet, without fail, the little graphic airplane will turn around and go somewhere else for a few seconds, or just stop, and you're left thinking "Don't do this to me, I've been watching you for two frikkin hours" - or you'll go make a coffee and come back and someone's refreshed your screen and you've lost your flight, 30 seconds later and panic sets in when you can't find it again "It was here somewhere, when do I call the police!"

Hello [is[/ihit-for-brains!
If a "failure to land" is now a euphemism for a crash, what is crash a euphemism for?
Or are you the type who uses the term "he has passed" instead of "he's dead"?
If you're that sensitive, stay off social media. There's a good lad

Where is "failure to land" being used as a euphemism for crash?
If Saddened had just put "And another one goes. A domestic Transasia flight in Taiwan has failed to land killing 'more than 40' of the 54 on board." then it could have been a euphemism, but he didn't.
If you really can't grasp what Saddened said and need it explaining word for word so that you can, then it is you that has "-for-brains!" not me, as i know, like everyone else on here, what he said.
